🚨 MAJOR CRAYFISH UPDATE 🚨 Northland divers, the rules are changing. Starting April 1, 2026, a total ban on taking spiny rock lobster will be in place from Ohao Point (near Pārengarenga Harbour) to Cape Rodney (near Leigh). It’s a big move to save our kelp forests and tackle those kina barrens.
For areas that remain open like the West coast of CRA 1 new restriction will also be put in place. Daily bag limit going from 3 to 2 per person, per day. Additionally to prevent people from switching their focus Packhorse crayfish will have a new national limit of 3 packhorse lobsters per person, per day. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
On the Hunt for decent Xmas present and you’re a last-minute shopper? Here are some ideas that you can’t go wrong with!

This summer is shaping up to be a cracker! Let's hope we get more weekends like this around the country. The game fish are turning up in good numbers in the North Island, and hopefully, they'll flow further south over the coming months. The w**d lines are already buzzing with tasty critters. We're keen to see your adventures this summer, so make sure you tag us in your pictures and stories.

Well, if he hadn't already achieved legendary status, Dwane has just stepped it up a notch and carved his name into a prestigious achievement no other male Kiwi diver has managed, by placing third at the World Champs in Brazil. We're bloody proud of the NZ team for punching well above their weight given the tough conditions. Congrats also to Kieran, Chris, and Jeffrey for their massive effort too!

Good luck to these legends Dwane, Kieran and Chris representing NZ at the Spearfishing world cup!
The CMAS World Spearfishing Championships, is launching off the coast of São Francisco do Sul tomorrow morning, local time. We look forward to hearing an update on how they're getting on. South Seas Spearo will be providing live updates.
The competition area is tiny—remarkably smaller than what we'd typically use for a New Zealand Nationals, which is already a swim-based comp. With only 2-3 meters of visibility, tomorrow will see around 80 boats crammed together, all racing and jostling for the best positions over five grueling hours of diving.

Join us this Saturday, November 22nd, at the One Ocean Protest in protest to make our voices heard. We are not against commercial fishing or reserves; we support our fishers and their livelihoods. Our fight is against a broken system that prioritizes short sited profit over sustainability and the public resource.
If this is the first time you’re seeing or hearing this here are the major points of concern:
THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN – FIX IT FIRST!
-We cannot responsibly introduce new species into a Quota Management System that is already failing.
-Introducing new species for commercial sale (like Marlin and others) is irresponsible when the current management is clearly not working to protect fish stocks for future generations.
FISH ARE A PUBLICLY OWNED RESOURCE
-Do not allow the government to limit public consultation on the management of this resource. Proposed reforms to set long-term catch limits with minimal consultation are unacceptable.
-The fishery belongs to all New Zealanders, and the management decisions must be transparent and challengeable.
SPEARFISHING: THE MOST SUSTAINABLE WAY TO SOURCE KAI MOANA
-Spearfishing exemplifies a low-impact, selective, and highly sustainable method for harvesting seafood. It ensures we only take what we need and provides food for our tables with minimal bycatch or habitat damage.
PRIORITISE FEEDING NEW ZEALANDERS
-The current system financially incentivizes exporting our precious resource, making fish less affordable and available for Kiwis.
-New Zealanders must be fed first.
NO COMMERCIAL FISHING INSIDE HPAs'
-A marine protection area that allows commercial fishing is not protected. The recent last-minute amendment allowing this misses the entire point of a Habitat Protection Area (HPA).
The time to act is NOW. See you this Saturday, November 22nd starting at Albany Park n Ride 8.30am.
Together, we can protect what we love and demand a system that works for everyone.
