Not everyone in our community can afford to buy a bike. That’s why Auckland Transport, in partnership with Got to Get Out, set out to help by giving away 100 secondhand bikes, each with a brand new helmet and lock.
To be eligible, recipients needed to be Community Services Card holders, senior citizens, or students. The bikes have gone to a wide range of people, including Afghani students from Selwyn College’s refugee programme, a family with eight children, and people wanting to ride to work to reduce fuel costs, as well as those needing low impact alternatives to get fit.

Neal has been cycling daily to work for the past nine years, covering a 20 km route between his home in Pakuranga and his work place in Newmarket. While a direct route would only be around 10 km, he chooses the longer ride because he enjoys the cycleways so much.
“Beyond safety, the cycleways have added real value to my day. They’ve created opportunities to interact with a wide range of users, both human and canine and those moments, combined with the physical activity, set me up mentally for the day ahead in the office. Of course, the weather isn’t always ideal, but even on rough days, it beats being stuck in traffic.”

Mingling Ding and his wife come from China and have lived in Glen Innes for 13 years. They love cycling their tandem bike and often play Chinese music while they ride. If you see them, give them a wave.
