The Canterbury and Westland section of the New Zealand Alpine Club Canterbury/Westland is the New Zealand Alpine Club's largest section, based in Christchurch.
The objectives of the Club are to encourage mountaineering, rock climbing and allied activities, and the enjoyment and conservation of mountain regions; and to bring together those interested in climbing. The Club aims to provide services for climbers, protect the interests and safety of climbers, and promote climbing activities.
Mission: "Perge et Perage" is the Club motto, suggested by Leonard Harper, the New Zealand Alpine Club's first President, back when the Club was founded in 1891. Its meaning: "Take Action and Pursue our Goals with Enthusiasm"

Mt Fyffe - in search of snow....again !
Recent club trip to Kaikoura with the idea to provide another easy/moderate trip for those new to using ice axe and crampons, wanting a nice over night camping trip or just as a good fitness walk.
Well, two out of three ain't bad - no snow to talk about again but a spectacular viewpoint to overnight camp and a good work out with full packs on as a 1400m height gain.
Thanks to Paulina W, Loic C and James M( and for driving ) for coming along.
A double set of staples have been installed by the C/W section of NZAC, either side of the access gully ( where the static rope hand line runs down ) at the Footwear Wall at Cattlestop Crag.
These have been placed at ground level in order for instructional groups and others to use as practice anchors.
There are now four sets of training anchors at this part of the crag.
A reminder about our rock courses as in the advertising.

Happy Tuesday everyone, just sending out a message to our adventuring community as we need your help.
A couple of weeks ago an OENZ a Grivel Nepal Ice Axe (red) made a break for it in the Broken River Area. It was lost in a section of bush around Mt Wall from BR access rd. There is a small OENZ engraving under the head of the axe on the shaft.
While a total long shot as we have no idea where it departed our crew (and it was an off-track bush bash)...we would like to see it again...so if out on your travels you happen to come across this escape artist and are able to reunite it with the rest of the OENZ ice axe family, it would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE 09:20! Hurray for Huey! It's snowing solidly right now with 20 cms overnight... and we're anticipating much more to come. Broken River is getting ready to open our doors again. We're aiming to be open Wednesday but keep on eye out as we might just open Tuesday afternoon. Cross your fingers, toes, eyes, limbs and skis for enough snow to run the tows.
Catered and self catered accommodation available. Book by emailing [email protected]
Look forward to seeing you real soon.
