Strong Showing from SBHS Basketball Team at AIMS Games

The SBHS Year 7 & 8 Basketball Team is currently competing in Tauranga at the prestigious AIMS Games, widely regarded as one of the largest sporting events for intermediate students in the Southern Hemisphere.

After six games, the team has produced several outstanding performances, securing victories against Otumoetai, Glen Eden Intermediate, Onewhero Area School, and Te Kura Reo Rua O Waikirikiri. They have also competed strongly in matches against TKKM O Te Koutu and Murrays Bay Intermediate.

With the tournament running through until Saturday, the team still has more opportunities ahead and continues to represent Southland Boys' High School with commitment, resilience, and pride.

We congratulate the players and coaches on their efforts so far and wish them every success in their remaining games. Go well, team! ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Tournament Week Round Up

Yesterday, our First XI Hockey team wrapped up their campaign with a match against Lindisfarne College. The boys controlled much of the early play but were unable to find the back of the net, with the score remaining 0-0 at halftime. Two goals to Lindisfarne in the third quarter put us on the back foot, and that proved to be the only scoring of the match.

The team should be proud of their tournament performance, recording a couple of impressive wins and remaining competitive in every game.

Our Basketball team had one final pool game against Kaiapoi yesterday. Unfortunately, they couldn't quite get over the line, suffering a narrow defeat. This result meant a crossover match against Dunedin rivals Otago Boys' High School last night. It was a closely contested game, with OBHS pulling away late to secure a 72-60 victory.

Today, the team takes on Waitaki Boys' High School in a semifinal for positions 13-16. A win would see them potentially face King's High School this afternoon to determine their final tournament placing.

Tournament Week Update

Yesterday, a number of our teams wrapped up their tournament campaigns.

The First XI Football team played off for 5th and 6th place against Mt Aspiring College. The boys from Wฤnaka proved too strong on the day, producing a dominant performance to claim a 3-0 victory.

Our Under 15 Rugby team faced King's High School in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. With a combination of fatigue and illness affecting the squad, King's raced away with the game to secure a 38-8 win.

The First V Basketball team had a busy day with two matches. Their first game was against tournament powerhouse Hillmorton, who showed their quality and won comfortably. However, the boys responded brilliantly in the afternoon, edging Burnside 83-80 in a thrilling contest. Ryder Kapene was outstanding in the victory. The team has one final pool game this morning before the knockout stages begin.

Also in action this week is Jake Slater at the National Under 19 Golf Championships. After an impressive start that included several early birdies in his opening round, Jake was unable to maintain the momentum in the second round and currently sits at +7 with one round remaining. He will be hoping for a fast start and a hot putter in the final round.

Our First XI Hockey team took on Wellington College yesterday. Unfortunately, it was the boys from the capital who adapted best to the conditions, recording a 4-0 victory. The SBHS boys are currently taking on Lindisfarne College and, at the latest update, trail by one goal in the third quarter.

Tournament Week Update

It was another action-packed day for Southland Boys' High School teams competing around the country, with impressive performances, hard-fought victories, and plenty of determination on display.

First V Basketball

The First V Basketball team got their campaign underway with two games today. Their opening match was against a strong Rangiora side, who proved too good on the day, claiming a 93-65 victory. Lachie McKay was the leading scorer for SBHS with 14 points.

The boys responded superbly in their second game of the day against Christchurch Boys' High School. Showing real grit, skill, and composure, they secured an impressive 90-76 victory. Cairo Lee led the scoring with 23 points in an outstanding team performance.

Tomorrow, the team faces two more challenges against Hillmorton and Burnside.

First XI Football

The First XI Football team enjoyed a successful day, recording two victories. They opened with a convincing 3-0 win over Maruawai, setting themselves up for a clash with local rivals James Hargest High School.

In a closely contested encounter, SBHS emerged victorious 2-1, with Hugh Dermody scoring the decisive goal with just 10 minutes remaining.

The boys will now take on Mt Aspiring College tomorrow in a playoff for 5th place.

First XI Hockey

Under the expert tutelage of Mr Boyce, the First XI Hockey team delivered an attacking masterclass against St Patrick's College Silverstream. Displaying the full array of skills developed throughout the season, the team produced a commanding 5-1 victory.

The result marks their second consecutive win and secures their place in the Rankin Cup tournament for 2027.

Under 15 Rugby

It was heartbreak for the Under 15 Rugby team, who went down 34-21 to Marlborough Boys' College in a match that swung back and forth throughout.

Marlborough raced out to an early 12-0 lead before the SBHS boys fought back strongly to take a 14-12 advantage into halftime. Despite creating opportunities in the second half, a number of missed chances allowed Marlborough to regain control, with late tries and penalty goals ultimately sealing the result.

The team will now play for third place tomorrow against traditional rivals King's High School.

Tournament Week Update

Football First XI

The Football First XI suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Taieri yesterday afternoon. After controlling large portions of the match and creating the better opportunities, SBHS conceded a penalty in the 38th minute, which ultimately proved to be the difference.

The team now awaits the outcome of this morning's final pool game against Maruawai to determine whether they finish second or third in their pool and who they will face in this afternoon's playoff match.

Player of the Match: Mercy Ramazani, who looked particularly dangerous whenever he was in possession of the ball.

Junior A Basketball

The Junior A Basketball team unfortunately did not have enough left in the tank to overcome Shirley Boys' High School in the 5th/6th playoff. After a demanding week of competition, the boys can still be extremely proud of their efforts. It has been an outstanding tournament from a young and talented team.

Hockey First XI

Following yesterday's victory, the Hockey First XI are taking on St Patrick's Silverstream this morning. The boys have made an excellent start and currently lead 2-0 at quarter time.

Under 15 Rugby

Today, the Under 15 Rugby team faces Marlborough Boys' College in their tournament semi-final. A place in the championship final is on the line, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30pm.

Senior A Basketball

Our Senior A Basketball team begins its campaign today with matches against Rangiora High School and Christchurch Boys' High School. Their opening game tips off at 2:15pm.

First XI Hockey

Today the team had just one match, taking on Rathkeale College in a crucial fixture that would determine which side of the draw they would progress through for tomorrow's playoffs.

The boys rose to the occasion, playing with excellent intensity and purpose from the outset. Their strong start was rewarded as they raced to a 2-0 lead, putting immediate pressure on their opponents.

Despite a few nervous moments late in the game, the team defended resolutely and showed great composure to protect their advantage. Their efforts were rewarded with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

The result sees the boys finish in a strong heading into the playoffs, and they will now eagerly await confirmation of tomorrow's opponent.

Under 15 Rugby

The boys continued their winning form this morning with an impressive 36-5 victory over St Andrew's College. It was another strong performance, with the team showing plenty of confidence and composure to secure an important win.

This afternoon, they faced an equally impressive Nelson College side. The match proved to be a tough challenge, with Nelson dominating proceedings and recording a 52-0 victory. While it was a difficult result, it provided a valuable reality check against one of the tournament's strongest teams.

Attention now turns to recovery and ensuring the squad is refreshed and ready for tomorrow's semi-final, a place that was secured thanks to this morning's excellent win. There is still plenty to play for, and the boys will be eager to bounce back and make the most of the opportunity ahead.

First X1 Football - This morning our Boys took on Roncalli College from Timaru, weather conditions were more suited to running football, and this is what SBHS delivered in the first half scoring two goals then able to keep the opposition at bay for a well deserved win. One more game later today against Taieri College.

Update from Junior A Basketball from Mr Meijer Courtside:

Day 3 - Game 4 - this saw us cross over versus fellow Southland Junior finalist James Hargest. After winning the Southland league, we were weary of retaliation by a team who were bouncing back after a couple of tough games.
It was an evenly fought game, with plenty of banter and competition, considering both teams comprised of the Southland U16 Rep Teams. JHC had an early 27-24 lead after the first quarter, but a strong 2nd and 3rd quarter saw SBHS take a 71-64 lead into the third. Jackson Kereama and Nixon Morrel kept the scoreboard ticking over, and with Carter Meikle and Isaac Bekhuis grabbing 10 rebounds each, were able to control the rebounding statistics.
JHC had a late fightback, and eroded a 18 point deficit, but it ended up being a 95-85 win to Southland Boys. A great game, played in fantastic spirit, much to the delight of the Southland supporters. Off to the quarter finals!!

Day 3- Game 5 - Vs Cashmere -_Quarter Final.

After grabbing a 16-0 lead (yes - that is correct) against the favourites on their home court in the main Arena, Cashmere slowly clawed their way back into the game.
Nixon grabbed 18 points in the first quarter, including a 4 point play on the buzzer, to lead the highly fancied Cashmere team. Up 30-17 at the end of the first, turned into a 57-45 halftime lead thanks to a Cooper Flowers buzzer-beater 3, and some fantastic shooting from Jackson Kereama.
Corbyn Freeman and Nixon continued ticking the scoreboard over, and thanks to some inspirational plays from Archie Frew and Jed Harvey, who brought plenty of energy off the bench kept Southland in front. Third quarter score was 66-65 to Southland. Could we hold on...?
Some desperate defence from Cashmere, and some lucky calls (and no-calls), unfortunately saw Cashmere grab the lead late in the 4th quarter, and hold on for a nervous last few minutes and take the win 91-86. Coach Connor Coll was well impressed with the performance of such a young line-up (all Year 9 students, and 1 Year 10), going up against one of the powerhouses of Christchurch Basketball.
There was plenty of applause and praise for our Southland team (both from Southland and Non-Southland spectators), to get so close to the upset of the tournament, and the team can hold their head high - knowing they were seconds away from a famous victory.

Day 4 - Game 6 - To sum this game up - we came, we saw, we conquered. We had a solid all-round game with an emphatic 94-67 win over St Thomas.
Isaac Bekhuis was back from injury, and Blake Sutherland contributed in the guard position, to help control the tempo of the game. The twin towers of Carter and Jed grabbed plenty of rebounds between them - to dominate the missed chances. The guard trio of Corbyn, Nixon and Cooper were able to control the game, and showed a calmness beyond their years, on the court. A great win after an early start!

Now we move to our final game - We are playing off for 5th place in the South Island Junior Premier Section this afternoon versus Shirley Boys (again).
