World Mental Health Day 💚
There’s a deeper reason Hānana Fitness exists.
For a long time, I battled with my mental health. Depression. Anxiety. Suicidal thoughts. And an overwhelming feeling of being utterly alone.
I loved living in a small town. I loved the quiet, the space and the isolation that came with it.
Until one day, that isolation stopped feeling peaceful.
It started feeling incredibly lonely.
I was training alone. I was struggling quietly. And after dealing with my mental health for such a long time, I found myself thinking about the places and moments where I had genuinely felt happiest.
And so many of them were in a gym.
Slogging it out alongside my old crew at 3216 ❤️.
Training hard. Talking s**t. Laughing. Struggling through something together. Celebrating each other. Turning up on the days when life outside the gym wasn’t so great.
It wasn’t just exercise that I missed.
I missed belonging somewhere.
So, eventually, I decided to create that for myself.
Hānana Fitness began because I needed somewhere to train — but underneath that was a much bigger need.
I needed people.
I needed connection.
I needed a reason to get out of my own head and share a space with others again.
And somewhere along the way, the little gym I created because I needed it became a community that I hope can be that place for somebody else too.
A place where you can turn up exactly as you are.
Where someone notices when you’re there — and notices when you’re not.
Where we sweat, struggle, laugh, lift, move and do hard things beside each other.
Because sometimes training builds strength that has absolutely nothing to do with the weight on the bar.
This World Mental Health Day, please check in on your people. Especially the ones who seem strong. Especially the ones who keep showing up. And especially the ones who have gone a little quiet.
You never really know what someone is carrying. 💚
