We’ve been super busy with a number of projects and initiatives happening around the area!

Firstly, a huge thank you to Ivan Wagstaff - Deputy Chair - Rodney Local Board, who has proactively represented our need for more equestrian facilities and trails across Rodney. As a result, we now have an Auckland Council adviser working with us on some proposed trails - a really positive step forward!

We’re also proud to be part of www.nzean.org and have been working alongside other Equestrian Access Advocacy Groups (EAGs) around the country to develop Fact Sheets and Good Practice resources and photos. This work has already led to a referral to Auckland Transport, giving us the opportunity to discuss equestrian requirements and safety on rural roads. It really shows what can happen when we all work together!

While MEAG’s focus is East Rodney as that is literally all the time out volunteers have time for, we’d encourage other passionate equestrians and groups to get involved in their own areas - and make use of the shared resources we’re developing together. And finally, a big thank you to our Rodney Local Board, which continues to be very supportive of equestrians and the need for better facilities and access in our area.

One of the areas we have highlighted to the local board for multi use trails is Whangateau. Check out this link & fill out the questionnaire- it would be great to keep this area as a multi use zone with the wonderful native planting (like Te Arai). We could even get a track down to the gravel pit & then it’s a short road ride to Cox Head Creek Rd & along to Whangateau Harbour:

Local board plans are open for consultation until this Thursday (23 July 2026). Unfortunately, horses have only been mentioned on multi-use parks page 12 (where applicable) and perhaps not a significant part of the community despite having one of the highest equestrian numbers in the country. Lots of people are moving to the area and we all need our space. From shared trails, parks with pony clubs and public spaces (existing and future).

As MEAG, we have already completed a questionnaire, presented and liased with the Regional Parks, Local Board - all are super positive towards horses. But the plan does not reflect this. We are volunteers, so feedback from you is very appreciated to help us!
We encourage you to take part in the ‘Have Your Say’ survey and make our Equestrian voices heard - it will take you around 5 mins.
There will be more times later to step up for further feedback - but let them hear us now, more people, more sports and definitely more equestrians.

Another example of discrimination which NZEAN is helping to fight. With our shared resources and experience around the country, we have many examples of good practices with shared trails.

NZEAN is a registered charity dedicated to supporting the safety and access of recreational equestrians across New Zealand. Our mission is clear: to preserve access to public lands, trails, and beaches, not just for today, but for future generations.

Great progress in Taranaki!

Another proud moment for our trails community! 🙌

After a lot of hard work, we’ve now installed signage through the Bridle Zone to clearly define this as a shared trail and help promote a safe environment for everyone using it.

This has come off the back of plenty of positive discussions between Taranaki Equestrian Network, New Plymouth Mountain Bikers, and Taranaki Trails Trust - building strong working relationships for the future.

A true team effort, and a big thank you to New Plymouth District Council (including their amazing Parks Team), TimberCo and Hirepool for helping make it happen.

We’re incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from councils and local businesses as we continue developing trails that connect our communities. 🚴‍♂️🐎🌿
