Applied Wing Chun Kung Fu - NZ's only Fochan Wing Chun - as taught by Sifu Dana Wong & the Qian Li Dao Academy. Wing Chun is an extremely effective martial art, made even more popular by the Ip Man movies. The Wing Chun System, known for its incredible speed, powerful straight punches & Chi Sao (contact reflex training), relies on angling & body mechanics rather than brute force. Life can suck.

Things go wrong. People disappoint you. Work gets stressful. Relationships get difficult. Plans fall apart. Sometimes you get criticised, rejected or blindsided by something you simply didn’t see coming.

None of us gets through life without some of that.

What I find interesting is how differently we can respond when it happens. Sometimes I’ve handled difficult situations really well. Other times I’ve reacted badly and looked back afterwards thinking I probably could have dealt with that considerably better.

That’s a big part of what Frame means to me.

It’s not about pretending things don’t affect you. Of course they do. You’ll get angry, frustrated, disappointed, worried or hurt. Nor is it about stubbornly holding your ground regardless of what anyone else says.

It’s about being able to experience those things without immediately handing them control of what you do next.

You can listen. You can reconsider. You can change your mind. You can admit when you’re wrong. But you can also hold your position when you believe it’s the right one.

And like most things, you get better at it through experience.

Pressure doesn’t create behaviour. It reveals what you’ve internalised.

Sore back at the moment, so my Wing Chun warm-up looks a little different. Nothing fancy - just moving, making things up and working within what feels good. Better than staying still.

I’m nearly 51 now, and what I want from training has changed quite a bit over the years. When I was younger, a lot more of it was about getting bigger and stronger. These days I’m much more interested in staying fit, mobile, strong and capable for as long as I can.

I still enjoy learning things that are difficult though, so one-handed cartwheels and macacos are on the list. There’s something satisfying about being able to do things I couldn’t do a few years ago, but also about maintaining the things I could.

Like most people, there are days when I don’t particularly feel like training, or I’m sore, or just really busy. But I know why I do it, and that makes doing the necessary work considerably easier.

I think the same applies to most things in life. Whether it’s your health, relationships, work or finances, knowing what you’re trying to achieve gives you a reason to do the things required to get there — including the things you’d sometimes rather not do.

The reason is personal. It doesn’t have to matter to anyone else. It just needs to matter to you.

Ever thought about trying Wing Chun?

We’re a small, friendly group training in Raumati South on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

We teach Foshan-based Wing Chun with a practical focus — learning the structure and techniques, but also getting comfortable actually using them through movement, drills and light sparring.

You don’t need to be fit, flexible or have any martial arts experience to start.

Your first two classes are free, so come along and see if you enjoy it.

Tuesday & Thursday, 7.30–9pm
