Namaste (often interchanged with Namaskar) is a traditional Sanskrit greeting and gesture deeply rooted in Indian culture and spiritual traditions.
Core Meaning
Literally translated from Sanskrit:
Namaḥ: "to bow" or "reverence"
As: "I"
Te: "to you"
Combined, it literally translates to "I bow to you."
In spiritual and philosophical contexts—particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, and yoga—it carries a deeper meaning: "The divine spark/light within me honors and recognizes the divine spark/light within you." It is a recognition of shared consciousness and mutual respect, acknowledging that fundamentally, all individuals carry the same essential divinity or awareness.
The Accompanying Gesture (Anjali Mudra)
Namaste is usually paired with pressing the palms together at the heart center (or forehead), with fingers pointing upward, accompanied by a gentle bow of the head.
Modern yoga classes around the world often close with a bow and a exchange of "Namaste" between teacher and students as a sign of mutual gratitude, reverence, and grounding after practice.
