This year's theme of "Matariki Herenga Waka" is all about inclusion and encouraging all people to celebrate Matariki together, and is interconnected with the central iwi of Tāmaki.

Matariki is the marking of Māori New Year in Aotearoa and has the key principals of:
Matariki Hunga Nui (remembrance)
Matariki Ahunga Nui (celebrating the present)
Matariki Manako Nui (looking into the future).
