Wise words ...
🔥 Failure isn’t final unless you refuse to take responsibility.
We all stumble. We all fall short. But the difference between growth and defeat?
Owning your part. Learning the lesson. Getting back up stronger.
👉 Blame keeps you stuck. Ownership sets you free.
💬 What’s one lesson you’ve learned from failure?

I had a great discussion yesterday with Sushma Webber (thanks Sushma for the kick in the pants)! One of the things that came up was my creative pursuits over the years. I have recently rejoined my choir Wososi (World Song Singers) after an absence of a few years & realise how much I have missed singing with a group. It brought to mind all the other creative endeavours I had been involved in over the years:
- Khandallah Junior Choir
- speech & drama lessons (culminating in Assoc Teaching Diploma)
- musical theatre
- theatre
- small parts in films and tv progs
I hadn't really thought about it earlier, but the common theme that comes through in these many activities is connection - connection with my fellow performers but also a connection with the audience. We all crave connection and this connection is one of the reasons I love working with women to help them overcome their fear of speaking in front of an audience - so they can communicate their message effectively, and connect with their audience with confidence and ease.

Let’s talk about public speaking fears.
There are so many smart, capable people who hate public speaking - not because they can’t do it, but because fear gets in the way.
I’d love to know - what’s the biggest fear that shows up for you when speaking in front of an audience?
Here are a few common ones—does one of these resonate with you?
🔹 Forgetting what I want to say
🔹 Sounding boring or unprepared
🔹 People judging me
🔹 Physically freezing up
Drop your answer in the comments, or let me know if it’s something else entirely! I read every reply and would love to hear your thoughts.

If we're feeling unsure or underconfident when we're speaking, eye contact can feel like a challenge. I get it!
Eye contact creates that extra level of connection with your audience (whether that's an audience of 1 or 100) and keeps them engaged. Here are four practical tips to improve your eye contact when presenting:
• Start with friendly faces - at the beginning of your presentation, find a few friendly, engaged audience members and connect with them first. This will help you relax and build confidence before expanding your focus.
• Use the 3-Second Rule - hold eye contact with an individual for about three seconds before shifting to someone else.
• Cover the whole room – rather than focusing on just one person or one side of the audience, scan the room smoothly and connect with different sections.
• Remember to blink – staring too intensely can feel awkward so keep the connection feeling warm and engaging by remembering to blink!
I hope these tips help you with making those valuable connections with your audience.

Hi everyone
I would really appreciate your input!
I’m reaching out as I’m working on developing a programme for current/upcoming leaders, and business owners who want to overcome their fear of public speaking so they can speak confidently in any situation.
As part of that process, I’m holding research mornings on 26 and 27 February between 9.00am – 1.00pm (NZ time) where I’ll be doing a number of 30-minute interviews on Zoom, to ensure I fully understand the challenges, possible solutions and have an outside perspective.
I was wondering if you’d be willing to spend 30 minutes on a Zoom call with me so I can interview you.
Just to be clear - this is not a thinly veiled sales call – it’s solely for my research. Also, I’ll need to record the session, but it will be deleted once I have gathered your valuable input.
Please let me know if you’d be willing to help me out and if so, please book your preferred time on 26 or 27 February directly through my calendar: https://lnkd.in/gKJtSme7
I look forward to hearing back from you.

The power of authenticity and vulnerability are often underestimated when it comes to speaking.
Authenticity and vulnerability are closely linked – authenticity is about being true to who you are - your values, beliefs, strengths and weaknesses. It’s about letting your guard down and sharing parts of yourself that might feel risky or uncomfortable. This is where vulnerability comes in – sharing a personal story or admitting you don’t have all the answers.
Being vulnerable creates connection, and we humans love connection – we feel far more connected to someone who shares their stories, shows real emotion or admits they’ve made mistakes.
Being vulnerable makes you more relatable - your audience may see parts of their own experience in yours. Being vulnerable also breaks down the invisible wall between you and your audience.
Sharing an emotional experience also makes your message more memorable - emotions create empathy and these moments tend to stick in people’s minds. If you tell a story about a challenge you overcame, your audience is more likely to remember both the story and the lessons you tied to it. This is because emotions play a key part in how we form memories.
When you're authentic, you build trust with your audience. Audiences can sense when you’re being real – being authentic will help you stand out and leave a lasting, positive impression.

I've been thinking about TED Talks lately and how they've become the benchmark for what constitutes a great speaker.
Don't get me wrong, I love watching talks on all sorts of topics,, but suddenly everyone wants to be able to speak at the same level and in the same way as a TED Talk speaker. And that just doesn't work for everyone.
Sometimes, all someone wants or needs is to be able to stand up and speak in front of a small group, lead a meeting, or feel confident at a networking event. They don't want to be able to speak on a stage. So, sometimes we need to take a step back, and remember that we're all unique and we all have something special to say in our own unique way. And we don't need to be perfect, we just need to be ourselves. Because that's who people want to listen to. You be YOU!
