By Mortimer Yangharry in Wabag, Enga Province

General Secretary of the People's Party Willie Palme has brushed aside media speculations that People's Party (PP) parliamentary founder and veteran Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas (pictured)has left the government saying he is an integral member of the Marape-Rosso government.

"Sir Peter Ipatas did not resign from the government," Palme said.

Pangu Pati

PRIME MINISTER MARAPE THANKS 52 PANGU PATI PARLIAMENTARIANS FOR STAUNCH SUPPORT AS FOUR OTHERS JOIN UP

Media Release
Monday, 12 February 2024
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea:

Prime Minister and Leader of Pangu Pati, Hon. James Marape has expressed his appreciation to the 52 members of his party for their "undivided" support to him and his deputy leader, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. John Rosso.

The Prime Minister said this after yesterday's party convention held in Port Moresby where four other
Members of Parliament have joined Pangu Pati.
This increases Pangu's numbers to 56 as the party steadies itself to meet any Vote of No Confidence
challenges beginning tomorrow, Tuesday 13 February 2024, when Parliament resumes this year.

PM Marape said, "In a parliament and party of equals, I am humbled that 52 Pangu MPs turned out in full at our convention yesterday and have affirmed their undivided support to me as their party leader
and Deputy Prime Minister Hon. John Rosso as deputy party leader.

"Pangu Party birthed Papua New Guinea in 1975. My generation of leaders owe it to those who came before us and to the rest of PNG that we must do better for them.

"We take this role very seriously." Pangu Pati led governments from 1975 to 1980, 1982 to 1985, 1988 to 1992, and returned in 2019 when Marape was elected as Prime Minister.

"We came back in 2019 at a backdrop of an economic recession and corruption. Four years later, I am pleased to say again that we have stabilised the economy with our fiscal policies through the use of
deficit budget with a fiscal consolidation to 2027.

"By 2027 we will have a positive balance budget and by 2034, we are confident of completely removing our national debts. "This generation of Pangu leaders are working to deliver economic independence for our country through finding ways to grow our economy."

The Prime Minister said his address to the Australian National Parliament last Thursday reiterated this objective that while he was prime minister, PNG would veer away from aid and grants, and focus on growing its trade and economic growth. "Our record speaks for itself. In four hard years, we have grown the economy by K32 billion. It was K79 billion when Pangu took over in 2019. Anyone can confirm this against World Bank, IMF, ADB or Central Bank statistics.

"We have freed the economy the fastest in the last three years after the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020." The Prime Minister said when he took office in 2019, he pledged that by 2029, PNG would be a K200 billion economy.

"I want to assure all Papua New Guineans that we are not sleeping. We are working hard to grow our economy. A bigger economy means more opportunities for jobs and businesses, and more money for the development of our country."Touching on his government’s flagship program, Connect PNG, PM Marape dismissed claims by his political opponents who have labelled it as a scam.

"Connect PNG is linking all parts of our country. Apart from restoration and development on major highways and town roads, we are especially focused on unconnected rural areas like Menyamya, Kaintiba, Telefomin, Pomio, Karamui and many more remote areas. These are all our people and they too need roads.

"In addition, we are building other infrastructure such as ports, jetties, airports, airstrips, telecommunications, and electricity. It's not only roads."

In education, the Prime Minister assured that his Pangu-led government is continuing to make sure all Papua New Guinean children are receiving education under the free education policy and directed into tertiary education or skills training.

In Health, the Prime Minister gave the assurance that by September next year 2025, Papua New Guineans would be able to receive full treatment for cancer in the country with the opening of the Port Moresby cancer facility. This will complement the heart and kidney facilities, giving wider options for Papua New Guineans to receive medical attention at home instead of traveling abroad.

In security, PM Marape said his government is working to fix the court system, the police, and correctional services. Focus is also on rehabilitating the country’s Defence Force to make it streamlined and functional to cater to the growing needs of the country's young men and women, he said.

"We are also restructuring our public service including fixing provincial systems to get services flowing effectively to our people. This is a huge task which we want to see happen for the sake of better service delivery.

"These are all basic things that have been falling apart over a long period of time. Fix the basic things and it becomes easier to fix the bigger things. "I want to assure the people of PNG that we care and we are working. Give time for this work to bear fruit so you can see the results better. Then judge us in 2027.

"I want to thank our solid coalition partners - whether you are a 1-man party or a 11-men party like URP, we respect you all the same so long as we are all working for PNG," said PM Marape.
