Repost
One of the things we have been grateful for at this Rugby League World Cup is how far PNG fans have travelled to support us. At our match against Canada yesterday we met Margaret Armstrong (nee Waine) who is from Chimbu Province in PNG but has lived in Scotland with her husband for 29 years. Today Margaret came to our team base in Leeds to bring some gifts for our Chimbu Orchids (all the way from Scotland) and we were honoured to give her an Orchids scarf and beanie.

With tears of joy, Margaret told us: “Even though I’ve been in Scotland since 1993, Chimbu is my home and my heart is still in Chimbu. I’m so proud of you ladies, your win last night and how you are representing us – both Chimbu and PNG.

“When I was young, women could not be involved in rugby league like this. We are becoming new Papua New Guineans now compared to what it was in my day, and you girls are part of that.

“I’m so proud that our culture and our country is changing. Even though I’m far away, I’m so proud of my people.”

🇵🇬 ORCHID MOLOWIA FOLLOWS IN KUMUL FATHER’S FOOTSTEPS 🇵🇬

Martha Molowia will make history when she runs out as Orchid #52 on Tuesday against Canada in the Rugby League World Cup, becoming the first daughter of a Kumul to represent her country in rugby league.

Her father Tuksy Karu is Kumul #147 and made his PNG LNG Kumuls debut against Wales in Swansea in October 1991. Martha has represented PNG in two Prime Minister’s XIII matches but, as these are not full tests, only receives her Orchid number for today’s game.

“I feel honoured and proud to be the first Kumul’s daughter to follow in their father’s footsteps,” Martha said. “My father’s dream has come true.”

Martha, who is 27, credits her father with being the biggest inspiration in her rugby league career. “He always told me that training hard and discipline were how he became a Kumul. He also says that being committed and humble are the key values when you represent your country.

“The advice that he gave me before this World Cup was, when we get to England, not to overthink things, aim for your goals, play your game as you do at home, have fun, and you will achieve what you set out to.”

After a long wait while representing PNG outside of the test arena, Martha’s Orchid number reflects her patience and hard work.

“I’m so happy that I’ve now got an Orchid number. I feel like I’ve finally made it.”

More than 50 people will gather at Martha’s family home in Port Moresby to watch the match, which kicks off at 3am PNG time on Wednesday.
