From the chessboard to the history books, GM Eugene Torre stands as a symbol of unmatched longevity and Filipino excellence.

In a recent interview, the trailblazer himself clarified the staggering math behind his legendary international career:

With 28 Chess Olympiad appearances — 23 as a player and 5 as team captain and coach — Asia’s first Grandmaster holds the record for the most individual games played in Olympiad history, with 270 games.

A LEGACY OF GREATNESS
1974 Nice – Board 1 Silver, becoming Asia’s first-ever Grandmaster.
1980 & 1986 – Board 1 Bronze.
1988 Thessaloniki – Led the Philippines to a historic 7th-place finish, its highest-ever Olympiad ranking.
2016 Baku – Board 3 Bronze at age 64.

At the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026, Torre returned as team captain, guiding the Philippine Men's Team to a Category B Bronze Medal and 32nd place overall, capped by a commanding 3-1 victory over Panama in the final round.
