Happy 94th birthday to Ernesto Colnago, a man who showed that cycling greatness is not only about winning races, but also about building the bike that makes those wins possible.
Born on February 9, 1932, in Cambiago, he began working at 13 in a freezing workshop, paid in cornmeal. After a leg injury in 1951 ended his racing ambitions, he turned to frame building. By 1954, at just 22, he had opened his own workshop, producing 25 frames per week.
In 1967, Eddy Merckx won Milan Sanremo on a Colnago, starting a partnership that included over 100 custom bikes and the 1972 Hour Record in Mexico City.
From pioneering carbon fiber after consulting Enzo Ferrari to building bikes for champions like Giuseppe Saronni, his frames have contributed to more than 700 major wins, 62 World Championships, and 21 Grand Tours.
At 94, Colnago remains a symbol of innovation and passion, proving that sometimes the real champion is the one who builds.
