His greatest move in chess may have happened away from the chessboard.

Wesley So left the Philippines and eventually began representing the United States, a decision that changed the course of his career.

But Wesley has been outspoken about the problems he saw in Philippine sports, including corruption and the difficulty athletes face getting financial support to compete abroad without the right connections.

He even pointed out that, in some cases, there were more officials on the plane than athletes.

For Wesley, leaving wasn’t just about finding a new place to play chess.

It was about finding an environment where he believed he could build the career he wanted.

Sometimes the biggest move isn’t made on the board.

It’s the move that changes your entire future.

His greatest move in chess was to move out of the Philippines.

A Filipino did this in Norway. 🇵🇭 In the world champion's own country, in front of his own crowd.

I'd never heard his name. Neither had my husband, and he's Filipino.

We'd just finished The Queen's Gambit as a family — highly recommend it — and then I found out the real version already happened. 😳

His name is Wesley So. He's from Bacoor, and he was a grandmaster at fourteen. The youngest the Philippines has ever produced.

Now, the guy he beat. Magnus Carlsen — world champion for ten years, and nobody in history has ever been rated higher than him.

They met in a world final on 2 November 2019 — one where they shuffle the pieces before you start, so nobody can lean on anything they memorised.

Twelve games were booked. Wesley needed six.

He won four, drew two, and Carlsen didn't win a single one. Final score, 13½ – 2½.

He didn't upset the world champion. He dominated him. 🤯

He was twenty-six. He plays under the American flag now, but he learned the game in the Philippines.

And he's not done. He won a major tournament again last month, and he's back in the world's top five.

Netflix made seven episodes about a chess prodigy who never existed.

Wesley So didn't need inventing. The Filipino was real. 🇵🇭

Elon Musk said AI will eventually solve chess completely. Not just beat humans, but solve the game itself, with every position and possible outcome mapped out.

But here’s the problem.

Chess has more possible positions than there are atoms in the observable universe. That’s not a small difference.

It’s an absurd level of complexity.

Checkers has already been solved, but chess is on another level. There’s also Chess960, with 960 possible starting positions, making memorized opening preparation far less useful.

Stockfish already destroys the strongest humans on Earth, yet it still hasn’t solved chess. Beating humans and solving the game are two completely different things.

Solving chess would mean knowing the outcome of every possible game before the first move is even played.

We’re nowhere close.

Genius doesn’t mean immune to being wrong.
