Ever spotted these spiny critters while diving or walking along the beach? ๐ฃ These are sea urchinsโmarine animals from the class Echinoidea found all over the worldโs oceans! ๐ Theyโve got a hard, round shell covered in movable spines used for defense and movement (Pearse, 2006). Sea urchins come in a variety of colors like black, red, green, and even white, depending on the species (Lessios, 2005).
Youโll often find them hanging out in coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky areas, where they help control algae and keep the ecosystem balanced (Steneck, 2013; Ling et al., 2015). Theyโre also a tasty snack for marine predators like starfish and sea otters (Sala & Zabala, 1996).
In many coastal communities, people harvest them for their edible roeโyum! ๐ฝ๏ธ That makes them not just ecologically important, but also valuable to local livelihoods (Andrew et al., 2002). Spiny but special, sea urchins are key players in both the sea and the community!

To wrap up the week, here are some anemone trivia! ๐๐ง
These are images of sea anemones, which are fascinating invertebrates belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. They inhabit the ocean and are known for their vibrant colors and tentacle-like appendages, which they use to capture prey with specialized stinging cells called nematocysts. These cells also serve as a defense mechanism.
Sea anemones prefer shallow coastal waters and are typically attached to rocks and coral reefs. Some even form symbiotic relationships with certain fish species, such as clownfish. Their graceful movements and unique adaptations make them some of the oceanโs most captivating creatures.
These sea anemones were observed and photographed at Escaรฑo Beach, Dumaguete City.

A beautiful soft coral, ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐.with ๐ซ๐๐๐
๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ resting nearby, is a stunning sight captured by PADI-dieVER Alcala Tj in the coral reef ecosystems of Escaรฑo Beach. This hardy species is recognized by its distinct sterile stalk and broad, mushroom-shaped capitulum, as well as the shape of its sclerites found in the interior coenenchymal tissue (Aratake ๐๐ ๐๐., 2012).
๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ belongs to the family Alcyoniidae within the order Alcyonacea of the subclass Octocorallia, which includes other soft corals, gorgonians, and sea pens. Alongside genera like ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ and ๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, these corals are significant benthic organisms in coral reefs, particularly in the Pacific Ocean, often surpassing scleractinian corals in coverage and contributing notably to reef biomass.
However, if you look closely, ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ nearby is actually covered in plastic sack strands โThis collector urchin typically carries materials like leaves, algae, and debris for camouflage against predators. However, mistaking plastic for natural debris raises ecological concerns, as it can hinder movement, feeding, and overall health, disrupting its role in algae control and reef maintenance.
Addressing this issue demands community efforts to reduce plastic waste, improved waste management, and reef conservation initiatives.
Together, we can protect our reefsโreduce plastic waste, restore balance, and safeguard marine life! ๐ซง๐ ๐ฆ

Exploring the vibrant marine life of Escaรฑo Beach! ๐โจ
Polychaetes, or bristle worms, are remarkable marine invertebrates known for their segmented bodies and bristled appendages. These creatures play a crucial role in marine ecosystems, acting as scavengers and providing food for various species. A true testament to the wonders beneath the waves! ๐๐ฟ
