โOn March 17, the Philippines pauses to remember the life and legacy of Ramon Magsaysayโa leader fondly remembered as the โChampion of the Masses.โ On this day in 1957, the nation was shaken by tragedy when the President died in the Mount Manunggal plane crash, ending a presidency widely admired for its integrity, humility, and deep connection with ordinary Filipinos.
โMagsaysayโs leadership style broke traditional barriers between the government and the people. Known for his simple lifestyle and hands-on governance, he championed reforms that restored public trust in government institutions during the post-war years. His sudden passing not only left the nation in mourning but also cemented his place in Philippine history as one of the countryโs most beloved leaders.
โYet decades after his passing, his legacy continues to live on, not only in national memory but also in institutions that carry his name and ideals.
โOne such institution is Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges (RMMC) in General Santos City. Long before it became known by its present name, the school began as Mindanao Vocational School (MVS), a modest institution dedicated to providing practical education to Mindanaoan students.

โMVS started with only 23 students. It offered three vocational courses such as hair science, men's tailoring, stenography, and typewriting; with spanish and office practice. It was then directed by Mrs. Aurora Millado.

โIn June 1980, the MVS took the name Magsaysay Memorial Colleges (MMC). It made a giant leap when it moved from being a vocational to academic institution offering first and second year Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Commerce, and Bachelor of Laws. MMC also offered a four year secondary course.

โThe transformation of its name into a tribute to the late President came through the initiative of the schoolโs former president and son of the founder Atty. Eugenio Millado and his wife, Doรฑa Aurora Garcia-Millado; Florante G. Millado. Recognizing the values that President Magsaysay represented service, humility, and leadership. Millado sought to honor the late leader in a meaningful way.

โIn a gesture that reflected both admiration and respect, Millado personally requested permission from Mrs. Luz Banzon Magsaysay to affix the name of her late husband to the institution. With her approval, the school officially became Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, turning the campus into a lasting memorial to a president whose leadership inspired the nation.

โToday, the name RMMC carries more than historical significance, it reflects a continuing commitment to excellence and innovation in education. The institution has steadily built its reputation not only in Mindanao but also on the international stage.

โIn 2025, RMMC made its debut in the Worldโs Universities with Real Impact (WURI) rankings, placing among the Top 400 Most Innovative Universities globally. The institution also earned recognition in categories highlighting ethics, integrity, and cultural values, demonstrating its dedication to holistic and socially responsible education.

โBeyond global recognition, RMMC has also produced board passers and topnotchers in professional licensure examinations, further solidifying its reputation for academic excellence. Its programs have gained distinction in national examinations, particularly in fields that prepare graduates for public service and professional practice.

โThe institutionโs growing academic influence has also been reflected in international assessments. In recent regional rankings of private universities in Asia and ASEAN, RMMC secured competitive placements, signaling its emergence as a globally aware institution committed to quality education.

โFrom a humble vocational school to an institution gaining international recognition, the story of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges reflects a legacy deeply tied to the values of the man whose name it bears.

โAs March 17 reminds the nation of a tragic moment in history, it also serves as a day to reflect on the enduring ideals of President Ramon Magsaysay's leadership rooted in service, humility, and dedication to the Filipino people.

โFor the RMMC community, the name is more than a tribute to the past. It is a continuing challenge to live up to the legacy of a leader who believed that true leadership begins with serving the people.

โThe institutionโs rapid growth and sustained service to the community echo the words of the late Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports (MECS) Regional Director for Region X, Dr. Felix T. Villarin, who once remarked that โRamon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges is the most philanthropic school in General Santos City and South Cotabatoโif not in the whole of Mindanao.โ His statement continues to reflect the institutionโs enduring commitment to education, service, and community development.
