Okay. But first...

What exactly is a VA?

Someone asked me recently:

"Coach, gusto ko sana mag-VA. But what does a VA actually do? Is it like being a Canva Queen? Do you sell something?"

Fair question.

Because if social media is your only source of information, you would think being a VA means:

✨ Making pretty Canva graphics
✨ Posting inspirational quotes
✨ Working from a coffee shop with a laptop
✨ Taking aesthetic photos of your desk setup

And while some VAs do those things...

That's only a tiny piece of the puzzle.

A Virtual Assistant is not a job.

It's a category.

It's like saying you're a doctor.

The next question is:

"Okay... but what kind?"

A VA can be:

📅 An Executive Assistant managing calendars and meetings

📧 An Admin Assistant handling emails and documents

Reality vs. Expectation: VA Dress Code

Expectation: 💼 Blazer. 💄 Red lipstick. ✨ Hair perfectly curled. ☕ Coffee in a ceramic mug. 📈 Looking like the CEO of a Fortune 500 company during Zoom calls.

Reality: 👓 Glasses hanging on for dear life. 🧑‍💻 Hair tied up with whatever elastic was closest. 👕 "Work shirt" on top...

🩳 Pajama shorts with questionable life choices below. 🦶 One slipper missing since Tuesday. ☕ Coffee reheated for the fourth time.

And the funniest part?
The client says: "You always look so organized!"

Ma'am...
I answered your email while stirring adobo, reminding my child about homework, telling Shopee rider was "wait lang po" and trying to remember if I already muted myself.

Work-from-home isn't a dress code.
It's a lifestyle built on strategic camera angles.

So here's my confession:
The version of me you see in meetings is only visible from the shoulders up.

The rest of me? That's between me, my oversized shorts, and the laundry basket.

No, this isn't a joke.

As someone who interviews and trains Virtual Assistants, I've seen something interesting.

Some applicants submit résumés that look like a Netflix credits scene.

Certificate after certificate.

Course after course.

Badge after badge.

You keep scrolling...

and scrolling...

and suddenly you're questioning your own education.

😂

Then comes the interview.

"Can you tell me about yourself?"

Silence.

"What would you do if a client gave unclear instructions?"

More silence.

"Do you have any questions for us?"

"No."

Now let me tell you about another applicant.

Zero certificates.

No fancy portfolio.

No expensive course.

Just one sentence that stood out.

"I may not know everything yet, but I learn fast and I don't give up easily."

Guess who got hired?

Because here's a secret agency owners don't usually say out loud.

We're not looking for the person who knows everything.

We're looking for the person who can figure things out.

Skills can be taught.

Software changes.

AI evolves.

Processes get updated.

But curiosity?

Humility?

Reliability?

Those are much harder to train.

So if you're waiting to collect one more certificate before applying...

Stop.

Your next opportunity isn't waiting for another PDF.

It's waiting for someone willing to learn on the job.

And that person might already be you.

The best résumé I've ever read wasn't the longest.

🤖 AI Fridays

ChatGPT stole my job...
..and then gave me three more.

😂

When ChatGPT first became popular, I panicked.

I thought,

"Well... that's it."

"Time to start a fishball cart."

Because how can a human compete with a robot that writes emails in three seconds?

So I asked ChatGPT to draft a professional email.

It did.

Beautiful grammar.

Perfect structure.

Zero spelling mistakes.

It was amazing.

It was also...

about as warm as a refrigerator manual.

😅

Then I realized something.

Clients don't hire Virtual Assistants because we know how to type.

They hire us because we know what to type.

AI can write an email.

But it doesn't know your client's personality.

It doesn't know your boss always says,

"Happy Friday!"

even when it's Tuesday.

It doesn't know that your client hates long paragraphs.

Or that one customer needs a little extra kindness because they're already frustrated.

That's still human territory.

Today, I use AI every single day.

It writes drafts.

Summarizes meetings.

Organizes ideas.

Fixes my grammar.

And saves me hours.

But it still waits for one thing before hitting send...

Me.

Here's the hard truth.

AI won't replace Virtual Assistants.

It will replace Virtual Assistants who refuse to learn AI.

Because the future belongs to people who can work with technology, not people who compete against it.

So don't fear ChatGPT.

Make it your unpaid intern.

Just remember...

You're still the manager. 😉

Before I became a Virtual Assistant,

I thought working from home meant escaping people. 😂

Before I became a Virtual Assistant, I spent seven years in customer service.

Seven years of talking to irate customers.

Seven years of hearing,

"I want to speak to your supervisor."

Seven years of learning patience, empathy, and how to smile through situations that tested every ounce of it.

And yes...

Sometimes the customers weren't even the most difficult part.

Sometimes it was the office politics.

Sometimes it was the personalities you had to work around.

So when I discovered freelancing, I thought,

"Finally... I'll get to work alone."

No commute.

No office drama.

No noisy workplace.

Just me, my laptop, and complete peace.

Well...

Half true. 😂

Because becoming a Virtual Assistant didn't mean working alone.

It meant becoming part of a team from thousands of miles away.

And honestly?

That became one of the biggest blessings of my career.

I've worked with clients who value my opinions.

Who trusts my judgment.

Who treat me as a partner in the business—not just someone checking off tasks.

The title says "Virtual Assistant."

But the role often becomes strategist, problem solver, accountability partner, cheerleader, and sometimes even the person who remembers where everyone saved that file.

The biggest lesson I've learned?

A great VA isn't defined by how many tasks they complete.

They're defined by the value they bring and the trust they build.

And the best clients know that.

They don't hire assistants.

They build teams.

That's why, after all these years, I wouldn't trade working from home for anything.

But because I found the right ones.

Messenger? ❌
Google Drive? ❌
Dropbox? ❌

Thirty minutes later...

Client:
"Oh, never mind. I found it. It was on my desktop."
😂😂😂

Here's the lesson:

A great Virtual Assistant isn't just organized.

They're patient.

They don't panic.

They know that sometimes the biggest productivity killer isn't the workload...

It's information scattered across 17 apps and 43 browser tabs.

If you're a VA, don't just organize your client's files.

Teach them a system.

Because every minute spent searching for a document is a minute not spent growing the business.

Work smarter.
Organize better.
And maybe... convince your client that "Desktop Final FINAL v7 Updated New.pdf" isn't a filing system.

We have this strange belief that if we download enough apps...

Success will magically appear.

Spoiler alert:

It won't.

The highest-performing VAs I've worked with don't have the fanciest software.

They have systems.

A notebook.

Google Calendar.

Google Drive.

ChatGPT.

And a habit of actually finishing what they start.

Meanwhile...

Some beginners spend three hours organizing a Notion workspace that contains exactly one page.

Titled:

"Things I Need To Do Someday."

The best productivity tool isn't an app.

It's consistency.
