Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate is a traditional Okinawan style of karate founded by Dai Sensei Meitoku Yagi in 1952 in Naha. The name Meibukan (明武館) roughly means “House of the Pure-Minded Warrior.”

It comes from the larger karate system called Goju-Ryu (“hard-soft style”), which was created by Chojun Miyagi. Goju-Ryu combines:

Hard techniques – punches, blocks, kicks
Soft techniques – circular movements, breathing control, joint manipulation, and redirection

Key characteristics of Meibukan Goju-Ryu:
Strong emphasis on traditional Okinawan karate
Deep training in kata (forms)
Use of ibuki breathing and body conditioning
Focus on close-range combat and self-defense
Importance of character development, discipline, and humility

Dai Sensei Yagi Meitoku earned the moniker "the makiwara breaker" for his ability to effortlessly shatter standard striking posts. He was known to actively seek out and destroy exceptionally resilient makiwara that others deemed impossible to break. Beyond his physical prowess, Yagi Dai Sensei was defined by his unwavering loyalty, remaining a dedicated student of Miyagi Sensei until his master passed away in 1953.
