Chōjun Miyagi and Shōshin Nagamine had a significant professional and collaborative relationship, even though they belonged to different karate traditions—Miyagi to Naha-te/Goju-ryu and Nagamine to Shuri-te/Tomari-te and later Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu.

Their most important collaboration occurred around 1940–1941, when the Okinawan authorities wanted to create simple, standardized karate exercises that could be introduced into school physical education. Traditional kata were considered too difficult for beginners.

A committee of Okinawan karate teachers assigned the work to Miyagi and Nagamine. Their contributions became the Fukyūgata ("promotional/popularization forms"):

Nagamine Shōshin developed Fukyūgata Ichi.
Miyagi Chōjun developed Fukyūgata Ni, which became known in Goju-ryu as Gekisai Dai Ichi.
Miyagi subsequently created Gekisai Dai Ni, building on the first form and incorporating more characteristic Goju-ryu movements.
