Air Force 1 soars past Duterteam, overcomes slow start, 85-81.

Air Force 1 overcame a troubled start and took control of the driver’s seat late in the ball game as Ralphael Cu managed to lead his team to a majestic come-from-behind victory against a feisty Rodrigo Duterteam last Thursday night. He also displayed his prowess from the key with a whopping total of 17 rebounds to complete a double-double evening for the victors.

The Duterteam were in control in the opening canto with Jameel Laigo and Renzo Manalo running the show early. The duo each hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 run in the game’s first three minutes.
But the men in white jerseys remained composed despite trailing by a huge margin. Their deficit reached by as many as 13 points with eight minutes before half time, but it seemed they were just waiting for their turn to strike back.

The determination and eagerness of Air Force 1 came into fruition in the third quarter. A couple of follow-ups from Ian Lipio sparked the run as his team silently erased their opponent’s double figure lead with an array of scores from the paint by the three minute mark of the third. A big three-pointer from Cu finally gave them the lead for the first time in the ball game with less than a minute to go in the third.

The tide turned in the final quarter with Air Force 1 already in control by possessing a double figure lead while their counterparts already the ones who were trying to erase their lead. Despite facing a pressure D from the men in green jerseys, the victors still managed to launch effective shots as Cu continued launching from long range to keep their opponents at bay. They hung on to win, 85-81 even though the Duterteam tried to encroach the lead in a last ditch effort in the final minute of the game.

Manman Isaac and Lipio each provided support to Cu with 17-points each to make this turnaround win possible. The former also tallied an astonishing total of 22 boards to record a double-double as well for Air Force 1.

Renzo Manalo, who played explosively in the opening period of the game, finished with the team-high of 18-points for the Rodrigo Duterteam. Jameel Laigo and Mark Chan each had 13-points with Chan grabbing 12 rebounds as well.

Saubier’s efforts lift Baroney over Opayi, 92-90.

A big fourth quarter surge was well enough for Baroney as they managed to secure a slim victory, 92-90 despite a late attempt by their opponent, Opayi to send the game to overtime. Alex Saubier played huge in this victory with a 20-point barrage which went along his 14 rebounds.

Tied at the start of the final period, Baroney suddenly found their stride which enabled them to control the phase of the last ten minutes of the matchup. Though it was a close one, the men in white jerseys had the clear control by scoring early in the period to jump ahead of their adversary.

It was Joel Dimayuga who provided the game’s biggest buckets in the fourth canto to help secure his team’s small lead. He had been quiet in the first three quarters, but managed to score six of his eight points in the last period. But their opponent kept threatening them with buckets which led Dimayuga to step up and protect his team’s advantage. With the lead down to two, 82-80 at the 4:40 mark, the man in jersey number 22 forced a tough shot from under the rim to extend his team’ lead to four once again.

Opayi managed to score big baskets that kept them within striking distance with a three-pointer from the corner by Kyle Chua and a ring shattering dunk by Eric Socka, but Dimayuga answered them each time as he made a crucial jumper and a quick fastbreak score with time winding down.

The victors secured their triumphant outing by taking advantage of their free throw line opportunities right before the game clock expired. In the end, the players from Opayi congratulated the victors as a sign of sportsmanship after a grueling hardcourt action.

Adrian Partosa provided vital scoring support for Baroney with 17 points; he also had 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Kiko Velhagen is the second cager with a double-double as he finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Socka crashed the board 22 times and scored 16 points, Renzel Yongco scored the team high for Opayi with 22 points. Ron Sarte also entered the double-figure mark with 11 points. Scoring champion Kevin Kok scored only 8 points, but made his presence felt in other categories with 9 rebounds and 6 assists.
