Victor Wembanyama explained why he signed a 5-year, $252 million contract instead of taking the bigger supermax deal:

“We already have a good team, and we had a great regular season and playoff run. But what’s even more exciting is our future.

“In today’s NBA, a lot of teams never reach their full potential because of salary cap and money issues. I want to make sure that doesn’t happen to us.”

By taking less money, Wembanyama could save the Spurs around $50 million over the length of his contract. It also gives San Antonio more salary cap flexibility to sign better players in the future without having to trade key teammates.
