After months and months of preparation, the Bulacan Highlanders are ready to take on a new challenge in the hopes of sparking a football revolution in their backyard.

They will be debuting in the SKECHERS 7's Football League alongside fellow debutants, Cavite Generals, Carmona Rovers, and Biñan Stallions as well as the league’s mainstays in Alabang South Supers, Siniloan Blues, Pasig Saints, Parañaque Nets, Taguig Soldiers, and defending champions, Pampanga Strikers.

From the day the club has been founded by Kads Mejia, he knew, they are bound for greatness but it wouldn’t come easily to them. It took him 15 years to get the club he founded, from being a backyard football team, to a squad that’s ready for battle in the semi-professional landscape.

“Dati, gusto ko lang maglaro ng football. Being a member of the Young Azkals myself, pinangarap ko ring maging professional football player. Hindi ko man siya maabot ngayon, hindi naman ako titigil hangga’t hindi ito nakakamit ng mga players namin,” said Mejia.

Talking about Bulacan Highlanders’ debut in the 7s Super League, Kads said, “Sobrang excited syempre since isa ito sa goal ng club, yung unti unting i-angat ang competitive level. Excited to showcase kung ano yung matagal na nating binubuo sa Bulacan at syempre, ginagawa natin to para mas maengganyo ang mga Bulakenyo i-try ang sport.”

Mejia continues to unite various clubs in Bulacan so that someday, the club would be represented by the entire province, something that hasn’t been achieved in any level of football in the Philippines.

Mejia, and his team meticulously worked on coming up with the best squad possible in their debut in the 7s and said, “We’ve carefully handpicked players na both magaling, at aligned ang mindset with the goal and vision of the club. Kaya sigurado akong lalaro ang team na may puso.”

As hands-on as Mejia is with the club he established, Bulacan Highlanders’ General Manager Ian Gonzales also works, not only on the back-end of the club, but also joins the squad in their training sessions.

He said, “A lot of sleepless nights and tons of work were put in to preparing the team. I am super excited to show what Bulacan has to offer. Honestly, I can’t really put into words the excitement that I feel as we take on our biggest challenge yet.”

Composed by individuals ready to represent Bulacan with all their might, the province of Bulacan will be well-represented in the said competition. The team will feature three homegrown talents from the city of Meycauayan in the likes of Ibrahim Musthafa, Santino Gonzales, and Aron Jay Acul-Acul.

Musthafa, being the newest player in the club amongst the three players, have made huge strides since joining the squad in 2023. What started out as an attempt to just continue playing football after finding his humble beginnings in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental.

Since joining the club, he’s finally made it to the squad that will make its debut in the Skechers 7s Super League against Cavite Generals at 5:30 PM. Dubbed as the “Smiling Assassin”, he’ll be boasting his quick feet and a real knack for goal.

He dreamt of making it to the major leagues but given the fact that there’s little opportunity for youngsters like him, he continued to worked his way up the ladder. “Pasilip-silip lang po ako sa field then sumali po ako sa isang open play nila doon. Nagtuloy-tuloy na po hanggang ngayon,” said Musthafa on how he started with the club.

In his three years with the club, he’s slowly reaching his dreams through the opportunities being given to him by the club and the management. Regarding his debut in the Super League, Musthafa said, “Gagawin ko po ang lahat para maka-score at hinding-hindi ko po sasayangin yung ibinigay niyong tiwala at opportunity sa akin.”

Aside from Musthafa, he’ll be joined by fellow grassroots players Santino and Aron who started with the club back in 2017. A couple of young boys just trying to have some fun on the humble field of EMA Town Center in Meycauayan, Bulacan, Gonzales and Acul-Acul has been together since the start of their football journey.

“Nung 2017, inaya lang po ako ni Aron na sumipa. Nagtataka pa po ako noon kung paano laruin ang football pero sinubukan lang naming. Tapos, nakita po kami ng isang coach nila doon na si Coach Vic na nagturo ng basics sa amin and simula noon, minahal na po namin ang larong football,” said Gonzales.

For more than eight years, Gonzales has been the unbreakable wall between the sticks for the Highlanders and he’s looking to use that experience in his possible debut during the season. He said, “Maraming salamat po sa opportunity na ‘to. Gaya ng ibang players sa buong Pilipinas, pangarap ko rin po ang makalaro sa ganitong liga kaya hinding-hindi ko po kayo bibiguin.”

With Gonzales manning the posts for the Highlanders, he’ll be relying on Acul-Acul to fend off the attacks before reaching his box as the 18-years-old centre back looks to make use of the opportunity given to him to apply what he’s learned from the club through the years of being with them.

“Eight years na po ako sa club, and nandito pa rin ako. To be honest, before tryouts, nag-doubt po talaga ako kung makakapasok nga ba ako or hindi. There were so many people pushing me to join the tryouts and dahil sa tiwala nila, nakayanan ko at natanggap ako sa team,” said Acul-Acul.

A true box-to-box player, Aron will be expected to help the team clear out any dangers in front of goal and to push for the attack as well. He said, “I will do my best to defend and even help out in attack, even if it means being exhausted at the end of the match. You’ll see me chasing the opponents until I clear the ball out or I get the ball towards my teammates for a chance on goal.”

Other than the three local talents, Bulacan Highlanders will also receive some massive reinforcements from Philippines Football League players with Mendiola FC 1991, Kassi Jean Kouadio and former Stallion Laguna FC team captain and Meycauayan City resident, Ruben Doctora Jr.

Their involvement with the club would be really helpful given that the Highlanders will be squaring off with the likes of Taguig, Alabang, and Biñan who are boasting plenty of talents from the Philippines top-flight club football.

Late 2022, Doctora has been feeling an itch to get back into the football field where he found out, through EMA Bulacan Highlanders FC’s Brand and Partnership Manager, and Media Officer, Jaimer Dela Cruz, that there’s a football field near his place that he could play in.

He immediately went to the field and, to the surprise of the squad who’s conducting their regular training sessions on a Sunday, gave them a taste of how a professional player spends his off-season. It brought smile to the faces of the young players and a sense of hope, one that they could bank on, in their quest to make it to where Doctora has enjoyed majority of his career.

From simply playing with the kids just to have some fun, Doctora slowly fulfilled his dream after his playing days are over; to help set up a grassroots football program that could build the next generation of professional football players. He started attending regular training sessions and even donated some equipment to the club.

Now, in their debut season in the Skechers 7s Football League, not only he’ll be playing to have some fun, but to also inspire the younger generation and give them hope that they too, can reach their dreams through perseverance, hard work, and consistency.

Leading the frontlines for the Bulacan Highlanders will be their team captain John Kennedy Bacea. With quite an experience under his belt from playing with Rizal Technological University, team NCR in the Palarong Pambansa, and occasionally with Manhur FC and Telus FC in the Corporate Football League, Bacea needed to find a club with an identity and one that is building for the future.

“I joined this club last year around May. One thing I really love is about how this club promote football (Football for all) to bulakenyos the coaches and staff are really hands on,” said Bacea.

He added, “They make you feel like a family member not just a teammate and they really put their trust to you. In just couple of months without hesitation they ask me to lead and be the CAPTAIN of the senior team of the club and I never expect that. This club is not just a Club but this is a real FAMILY.”

Heading into it’s first season in the semi-professional setup, Bacea and the Bulacan Highlanders will be aiming for a very memorable debut. He said, “We are all excited because we have lots of dreams for this club and this SUPER LEAGUE will be our stepping stone to reach those dreams! It might be hard? BUT WE BELIEVE! NOTHING IS POSSIBLE! LET’S GO BULACAN LABAN!”

The team wouldn’t be complete without the tacticians off the pitch. Guiding the squad from the sidelines will be Head coach Gelo Medina, and Assistant Coach Dominic Jacob.

Medina’s humble beginnings with the club happened during the time when the entire country is reeling from the effects of the lockdown. Having that itch to play again despite the restrictions, Gelo found the EMA Town Center and started joining the Bulacan Highlanders’ open play sessions. He then found a sense of belongingness with the younger players in the squad and vowed to help them reach their dreams.

“Right from the get-go, it felt like a huge family willing to help each other out to reach their goals in life and celebrate even the littlest of victories. This reeled me closer to the club and from then on, I never looked back,” said Medina.

On their debut season in the 7s Super League, Medina said, “We are really excited for our team's debut at the prestigious 7's Super League. This is a milestone and a historic moment for the club. It is also a manifestation and product of the collective efforts of all the people inside and outside the pitch—the players, staff, coaches, and supporters. Fueled by our passion and unending belief, the team is optimistic not just for our Sunday game but also for the whole season.”

He added, “May this achievement inspire the main purpose and reason why we are doing this—our grassroots players, our youth team, and the future of not just the club but also Bulacan football. This is also for everyone who dreamed and believed with us. Expect a team playing with fire in their eyes and passion in their hearts. We are going all out!”
