What design is sturdier on strong typhoons?
1. CONCRETE SLAB ROOF
Pros:
- A concrete slab roof is heavy and solid, making it very resistant to being lifted or damaged by strong winds compared to lightweight roofs.
Cons:
- Possible Water Leakage
If not designed with proper drainage slope or waterproofing, water can pond on top, causing leaks or structural stress over time.
- Heavy and Most Expensive. Concrete slab roofs are costlier and need a stronger foundation and beams, increasing the building’s total weight and construction cost.

2. PARAPET STYLE ROOFING
Combination of Concrete and Metal Roofing.
Pros:
- Reduces Wind Uplift. The parapet wall acts as a windbreak, preventing strong winds from directly lifting the roof edges , a common cause of roof failure during typhoons.
- Cheaper than Concrete Slab.
Cons:
-In very heavy rainfall, blocked drains can cause water buildup and overflow over the parapet, damaging walls or interiors. So it must be designed with overhang cantilevers, no inside gutters.

3. HIP ROOFS
Pros: Excellent Stability and Durability
Because all four sides slope downwards, hip roofs are more stable than gable roofs.
Ideal for areas prone to high winds, storms, and typhoons (like the Philippines).
Cons:
-Higher Cost compared to shed type roof because of more complex design means higher material and labor costs.
-Complex Construction requires more structural components (like trusses and rafters), making installation and repair more intricate.
- Prone to leakage on its valley gutters
