It smells like watermelon, mango or mint. There is no ashtray, no cigarette butt and often no lingering smell on your clothes.
That can make va**ng feel harmless.
It isn’t.
While evidence indicates that completely switching from ci******es to e-ci******es can reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals, health authorities stress that va**ng is not safe—especially for people who never smoked in the first place.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says e-cigarette aerosol can contain ni****ne, cancer-causing chemicals, heavy metals and ultrafine particles capable of reaching deep into the lungs.
YOUR LUNGS ARE NOT INHALING ‘WATER VAPOR’
What comes out of a v**e is an aerosol created by heating liquid containing various chemicals.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), e-cigarette emissions typically contain ni****ne and other toxic substances harmful to users and people exposed second-hand. Some substances generated by e-ci******es are known carcinogens, while others are associated with heart and lung disorders.
The CDC also warns that v**e aerosol may contain nickel, tin and lead, volatile organic compounds and flavoring chemicals such as diacetyl, which has been linked to serious lung disease.
YOUR HEART ISN’T SPARED
The potential damage goes beyond the lungs.
Research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health found that chronic e-cigarette users had impaired blood-vessel function compared with non-users. Researchers also detected biological signs associated with inflammation and blood clotting.
And smoking ci******es while va**ng—the so-called “dual use” practiced by some smokers—is no safe compromise. The CDC warns that it can result in greater toxin exposure and worse respiratory outcomes than using either product alone.
YOUNG BRAINS ARE ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE
For teenagers and young adults, ni****ne brings another danger: addiction while the brain is still developing.
The CDC says brain development continues until about age 25, and ni****ne exposure during adolescence can harm parts of the brain involved in attention, learning, mood and impulse control.
The WHO has likewise warned about the health risks of e-ci******es and their growing appeal among young people.
WHAT ABOUT CANCER?
Scientists still do not have decades of human data needed to determine va**ng’s full long-term cancer risk.
But that uncertainty is not proof that va**ng is safe.
A 2025 systematic review published in To***co Induced Diseases found that evidence remains insufficient to quantify long-term human cancer risk, while existing research raises concerns about exposure to carcinogens, oxidative stress and DNA damage.
That distinction matters: va**ng may expose cigarette smokers who switch completely to fewer harmful chemicals than continuing to smoke, but less harmful does not mean harmless.
For Filipinos who do not smoke, there is no health benefit in starting to v**e.
You are not replacing a more dangerous habit.
You are simply adding a new one.
