Join us for our three-day workshop exploring the intersections of movement and the screen, thought and practice.

Our special guest artist is Iina Naoto, founder of Dance and Media Japan, a collective of producers in the fields of dance and digital media that has shaped Japan’s screendance movement since 2003. His visit is made possible through the generous support of The Japan Foundation, Manila.
Naoto Iina will share his insights on dancefilm practice and aesthetics in Japan and Asia, and curate a special screening of works from across the region.

Introduction: Choreography and the Moving Image
Myra Beltran, facilitator
This module clarifies the relationship of dance to film, locating that connection within a historical and theoretical context. It explores choreography as language and writing in the moving image, and surveys cinematic strategies used in dancefilm practice across time.
Space, Time and Narrativity
Sherad Anthony Sanchez, facilitator
This module investigates how time and space are choreographed in film, and how moments can be de-familiarized to attain a choreographic sense. It examines intersections between the languages of dance and cinema — between narrativity, movement, and image-making — toward an alternative, gestural film language.
Choreographing the Archive
Ruelo Zendo, facilitator
This module proposes a choreographic approach to archival material and found footage. It explores how dancefilm can reanimate archives through movement-based sensibilities, opening possibilities for reimagining contemporary dance archives in the Philippines.
Dancefilm Practice and Aesthetics in Japan and Asia
Iina Naoto, facilitator
This talk exposes participants to dancefilm/screendance practices in Japan and Asia, challenging the dominance of Western frameworks in Philippine research and dissemination. It asks whether a distinct Asian dancefilm aesthetic has emerged, and what particularities it holds in terms of production, presentation, and regional networks.
