Southside!

Ecstatic to be back at Paceline and working with our fellow cyclists! Taking our time, as always, to really dial in the fits, then sending them out into the real world for some more inputs before seeing them back again with the suggested parts.

Always such great vibes and community here! And some really nice kits too 😭

Thank you for having me. Always a pleasure 🙏🏻

Slam It and Hope for the Best?

Cables tucked away, no spacers in sight definitely makes the bike look fast and sleek. But does it actually make you faster?

I guess the real question is: can you comfortably hold that position for the kind of riding you do?

Every rider is different, with different bodies, goals and riding demands. One rider may prefer a higher stack for a more upright, sustainable position, while another may be perfectly happy spending most of their time low and aero.

And remember once you cut that steerer, there’s no undoing it. Or… you can always buy a new fork 😅

We always make sure there is some room for error and confirm the stack height with real world riding to validate if it works for you. A comfortable rider is a fast rider 🙌

What’s Your Ideal Frame Size?

When helping a rider find the right frame size, we look beyond the usual “What size does the manufacturer recommend?”

There are three main numbers we pay look at: stack, reach, and seat angle.

Stack - How high or low do we need the handlebars to be?

This depends on the rider’s proportions, flexibility, riding style, and goals. A higher stack might make sense for one rider, while another may need a lower front end.

Reach - How far forward will the rider and his hands be positioned?

We look at the frame’s reach together with the stem length and handlebar dimensions. Is the frame too long? Will we end up needing an unusually short stem? Or will we need to go beyond 130mm in stem length?

The goal to find a combination that gives us the right overall cockpit without compromising the bike’s geometry and handling.

Seat Angle - Probably the least discussed, but just as important.

The seat angle helps us understand where the rider will sit relative to the bottom bracket. A steeper or slacker angle can significantly change saddle position, which may determine whether we need an inline or setback seatpost.

And then there’s standover, which is often overlooked. It may not determine the fit by itself, but it can be an important consideration depending on the rider’s physique.

Frame size charts are a great starting point, but they don’t paint the full picture. They don’t account for your individual proportions, riding position, flexibility, riding style, or what you’re actually trying to achieve on the bike.

That’s why two riders of the same height can end up on completely different frame sizes — and both can be right.

Building the Factor Ostro Gravel Chico x Styx at Built Cycles

Build by: MJ
Camera work: Josh

Had the pleasure to work with Lean’s bike fit as we worked to address saddle discomfort, hand numbness, and other niggles on the bike.

Lean already did an excellent job on the equipment before coming into the session - shorter crank and ideal stem length. All we needed to do was to set up the bike better for him.

Here We Go Again! Bentang Jawa 2026

Taking the learnings from the previous year and throwing in some new techniques in the mix, we’ve come up with a slightly different approach for Gabby’s Vielo.

Gabby is now riding a slightly shorter 165mm crank, paired with a slightly more upright position, but with the addition of full-length aero bars — a departure from the compact ones she rode with last year.

The aero bars add another dynamic to the fit, providing an additional hand position and the ability to maximise a more aerodynamic position during those long, flat sections.

We’ve worked with Gabby to see all these small changes come together to create a position that’s better suited for Bentang Jawa

All the best, Gabby, and keep safe! 🫡

Sizing the Factor ONE

The Factor ONE, with its Hyperbike geometry, needs a little more care when putting all the components together.

One of the key differences is its steeper seat tube angle, which positions the rider further forward compared to more traditional road bike geometry. So, do you need a setback seatpost, or would an inline post work better?

Then there’s the handlebar. The ONE offers two options: a riser bar, which adds 20mm of stack, or the flat bar. From there, stem length becomes another important piece in finding the right position and reach.

All these details need to come together to create a bike that fits #. Getting these decisions right before the build can also remove much of the guesswork when choosing components.

For this session, we worked with Luke to dial in the sizing and determine the best-fitting components for his Factor ONE.

Thank you for trusting us with your bike sizing, Luke! 🫡

Bentang Jawa Preps 🇮🇩

Fortunate to have the chance to work with Rye as he prepares for his second Bentang Jawa journey — a grueling 1,500km race with 17,000m of elevation in Indonesia. A true test of mental toughness and physical endurance. 🫡

Following our initial fit on the Factor Ostro Gravel, we’ve now upgraded the Black Inc aerobars to allow for extensions, giving him more hand positions on the bike while also providing some nice aerodynamic gains on the flats.

It’s always exciting to work with these kinds of setups, where you have to account for every single detail ahead of a monumental journey. With a ride of this magnitude, even the smallest details can make a difference.

I think we’ve covered almost everything there is to cover indoors! Now it’s time to put it all to the test out on the road.

Good luck and Godspeed, Rye. 🫡
