Today is March 14th (3-14), so it’s π (Pi) day!
Ok, so it’s not health or nutrition, but nothing says “science” more than physics and math. And, in honor of the passing of physicist Stephen Hawking yesterday, it seems appropriate to celebrate Pi (π) day today.
Today is the 32nd anniversary of the math-inspired holiday. Pi is an important foundation of mathematics and physics. It’s used to calculate circumference and volume with equations such as A = πr2, and the volume of a cylinder, V = πr2h.
Fun Facts –
• The first calculation of pi as 3.14 is attributed to Archimedes, a Greek mathematician in the 3rd century B.C.
• A Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi (429-501 A.D.) calculated pi to 6 decimal places.
• The first use of the symbol π is credited to Welsh math teacher William Jones in 1706.
• The current record for computing the digits of pi goes to Peter Trueb, who set the record last year at over 22 trillion digits.
• NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab utilizes only 15 digits of pi to calculate interplanetary travel, and 39 digits of pi would be sufficient to calculate the circumference of the known universe.
How do you celebrate π day? And yes, eating pie does count.

When Your Cells Need Oxygen, They Call on Iron
Iron is the heaviest element formed in the cores of stars and is the primary building block of steel. It’s the very same element that’s essential for carrying oxygen in the blood to the cells throughout the body.
Iron is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide.
Interesting fact: raw spinach is not a good source of iron. It contains high levels of oxalic acid that binds iron and prevents it from being absorbed efficiently. However, cooking reduces the oxalic acid content making cooked spinach a decent source of iron. And, one cup of cooked spinach contains about five times more spinach than a cup of raw spinach.
For more interesting facts about iron, where to get it, and why it’s important, check out this short article.

According to a New Study, You Are What You Ate as a Child
It’s no secret that children depend on their parents or other adults to be role models when it comes to diet. If they’re not introduced to healthy food, like fruits and vegetables, at an early age they often continue into adulthood with poor diets and it can be a real challenge when it comes to long-term health.
A new study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology takes it one step further. In a study with mice, researchers found that feeding them too much sugar and fat in childhood potentially alters their microbiome for life, even if they learn to eat healthier as adults.
The mice that were fed a high fat, high sugar diet as juveniles had a significant decrease in the number and diversity of gut bacteria as adults. Good health requires a balance of diverse micro-organisms. An imbalance or low diversity caused by medications, illness, or a poor diet could make the body more susceptible to disease later in life.
Exercise is known to improve gut diversity, but this was not the case in the group fed the poor diet as juveniles. The poor diet during early years had a negative impact on the gut microbiome that exercise did not correct.
In the words of the researchers, “You are not only what you eat, but what you ate as a child.”
