A dream that must not die, long after our tears have run dry - Journal News Online 15/06/2026

Some dreams end too soon, but the dreams themselves must never die.

The story of Rene Baterbonia reminds us that behind every athlete is a family, a sacrifice, and a dream for a better future. As we mourn a young life lost too soon, may we also reflect on our responsibility to create more opportunities for the next generation of Filipino athletes.

Let us transform grief into action, loss into purpose, and memory into legacy.

WHAT EACH PHOTO MEANS
(Starting from the upper left and moving to the right)

1. A deeply touching and unforgettable moment with Asian gold medalist para swimmer Angel.

Since Angel was born without arms, she used her feet to take a selfie with me.

Her story is a powerful reminder that resilience, persistence, and courage can overcome even the greatest limitations.

She embodies the true spirit of human determination.

2. A grassroots archery program using improvised PVC bows

This reflects an important lesson in sports development: innovation and creativity can bridge the gap between limited resources and meaningful opportunities.

Sometimes, greatness begins not with expensive equipment, but with imagination and purpose.

3. My favorite weightlifting coach, Gary Hortelano, built a small pocket gym that looked more like a shanty in the middle of an impoverished community.

Despite all the reasons why he should have failed, Coach Gary showed me every reason why passion, dedication, and commitment still triumph over adversity.

From that humble and dilapidated gym emerged future world youth champions and Olympians like Elreen Ando and John Ceniza.

This is proof that greatness is not always born in world-class facilities.

Sometimes, it is forged through sacrifice, love for the sport, and unwavering belief in young athletes.

4. Ziki, a young gymnast from Labangon Public School, started training at only five years old and is now eight.

He represents hope, discipline, and the beauty of dreaming young. Perhaps one day, he may follow the path of Carlos Yulo and inspire an entire generation of Filipino gymnasts.

5. This photo perfectly captures what genuine sports leadership is all about: creating opportunities for athletes to grow, flourish, and secure a better future.

One of Bernard’s proudest and most invaluable contributions to Philippine sports is helping guide and support the journey of June Mar Fajardo.

True leadership is not measured by titles, but by the lives transformed along the way.

6. Dedicated volunteer coaching by para gold medalist Sheryl, who continuously provides free chess lessons to public school students.

Her selfless service reminds us that the highest purpose of sports is not fame or medals, but uplifting communities, sharing knowledge, and inspiring others through generosity and compassion.
