BALL RETURNED TO THE BACKCOURT – OFFICIATING CLARIFICATION

To determine whether a backcourt violation occurred, officials must evaluate the following key points:

-Was the action a pass or merely a tap?
A pass implies control and direction.
A tap does not establish control and does not create team control.

-Had the team fully established frontcourt status?
Team frontcourt control is established when:
A player of that team has control of the ball with both feet completely in the frontcourt, or
The ball is touched by a frontcourt player after crossing the center line.

-Did team control end?

Team control ends when:

A player attempts a shot for a field goal, or
The ball touches the ring.
Once the ball hits the ring, frontcourt–backcourt status is reset.

-After the shot or ring contact:
Any player from either team may legally recover the ball, even if it goes into the backcourt.

No backcourt violation can occur because team control had already ended.

NBA Referees have arrived at their Referee Preseason meeting! Throughout the next week, they will be studying and reviewing points of emphasis for the upcoming season, conducting health exams and tests, team building, completing rulebook exams and meeting with @NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
