I told her straight away: I think you’re an underachiever. 😤

Serena Williams already had 13 Grand Slams, and she was shocked. But my point was simple — she was way too good to lose as many matches as she did every year. On the first day, she walks onto the court, I say good morning. No answer. No eye contact. We start practicing, I give her feedback after ten minutes. Same thing. Nothing. She wanted to keep the power.

But if I accept that kind of behavior, there is no trust, no respect, and no coaching relationship. So I stopped everything. She sat down with a cap on, and I hit the visor of her cap hard — not her head, the cap. I looked at her and said: I have rules, and you’re going to respect them. Rule number one: when you enter the court, you look at me and you say good morning. Rule number two: when I speak to you, you look at me and you answer. I asked her if it was clear.

A few months later, she told me: when you did that, you had me. 😎
