As I was rushing out of Kreutz Campus for a meeting at the Salvador Campus, I caught sight of a familiar face. It was one of our coaches accompanying a new recruit. For a brief moment, I paused and found myself reflecting.
I continue to be amazed by the dedication of our coaches—their willingness to accompany, guide, encourage, and believe in young people. Behind every promising student-athlete is a community of individuals who quietly invest their time, energy, and hearts in helping them grow. We often see the games, the victories, the medals, and the recognition. What we do not always see are the countless conversations, sacrifices, follow-ups, training sessions, and moments of encouragement that happen behind the scenes.
Yet seeing them also reminded me that the journey ahead is never simple. Beyond the excitement of being recruited or joining a team lie many realities: expectations, responsibilities, character formation, endurance, discipline, limitations, academics, family life, friendships, safety, and mental health. There will be victories to celebrate, but there will also be setbacks, disappointments, injuries, difficult decisions, and moments of self-doubt.
Growing up is already challenging. Doing so while balancing the demands of school and competitive sports requires even greater courage, maturity, and resilience. For some student-athletes, it may mean spending less time at home. For others, it may mean waking up before dawn, missing social gatherings, managing academic requirements, or learning how to deal with pressure and expectations. It is a leap of faith not only for the student-athlete but also for the parents, coaches, teachers, and everyone who accompanies them along the way.
As educators, we hope that our student-athletes will not only become stronger competitors but also better persons. We hope they learn discipline through training, humility through victory, perseverance through defeat, gratitude through opportunities, and compassion through their relationships with others. We hope they discover that success is not measured only by medals won or championships achieved, but also by the kind of person they are becoming.
Today, I offer a prayer for all our student-athletes. May they grow not only in skill and achievement but also in wisdom, humility, integrity, resilience, and faith. May they find mentors who will guide them well, teammates who will support them, friends who will challenge them to become better, and communities that will care for them. May they always remember that their worth is never measured solely by rankings, scholarships, trophies, or victories.
In the end, trophies gather dust, records are eventually broken, and cheers fade away. But character, faith, values, friendships, and the lessons learned through the journey remain for a lifetime.
We can only accompany them, pray for them, and wish them the very best as they continue to take risks, pursue their dreams, and make courageous leaps of faith. May the Lord watch over them, protect them, and guide them as they grow not only as athletes but as men and women for others.
