Under RA 9850 (Dec 11, 2009), Arnis was declared the Philippine National Martial Art and Sport — honoring our indigenous roots and championing Filipino excellence.

Isang sining. Isang laban. Isang kultura.

WHY CHARACTER MATTERS MORE THAN MEDALS?

1. Ang Medals, Naiiwan sa Cabinet.

Ang Character, Dala Habambuhay.
Lahat ng tropeo, kumukupas.
Lahat ng medal, kumakalawang.
Pero ang ugaling nahubog mo sa sports—
disiplina, respeto, teamwork, humility—

Medals celebrate a moment.
Character sustains a lifetime.

2. Character Shows During Adversity

Madaling maging mabait kapag panalo.
Pero ang tunay na pagkatao lumalabas kapag:
• talo
• pagod
• under pressure
• hindi napili
• na-injure
• nasabihan ng corrections
• may unfair calls

Champions are built not during glory, but during adversity.

3. Good Character Builds Good Teams

Athletes with character:
• marunong makinig
• hindi selfish
• hindi sumasagot
• hindi naninira
• hindi nagra-rivalry sa teammates
• humble kahit magaling

Kapag ganito ang grupo, automatic ang success dahil walang divisyon.

4. Coaches and Leaders Remember Character, Not Medals

Pag tapos na ang season, one thing remains in their memory:

That’s what defines you.

5. Character Affects Life Beyond Sports

Ang atleta na may magandang character,
mas nagiging:
• mabuting anak
• mabuting kaibigan
• mabuting coworker
• mabuting leader
• mabuting citizen

Sports is just the training ground.
Life is the real arena.

6. Medals Make You Proud.

Character Makes You Worthy of Respect.
Anyone can win a medal.
But not everyone can earn respect.

Respect is not given by results—
it’s earned through attitude.

Sa dulo, hindi sinasabi ng tao:

“Yan si ___, ang daming medal.”

Mas sinasabi nila:

“Yan si ___, mabuting tao. May integridad. May respeto.”

Skills make you win games.
Character makes you win life.

1. Mindset ng Isang Champion Athlete

A. Paano Mag-Isip ang Champion Athlete

1. Growth Mindset

Every weakness = assignment.
Every challenge = upgrade.

Line they live by:

“Hindi ako perfect, pero araw-araw akong nag-i-improve.”

2. Self-Discipline Over Motivation

Ang motivation mabilis mawala.
Pero ang disiplina, araw-araw mong kasama.

Gising kahit pagod.
Training kahit walang mood.
Finish repeats kahit pagod na ang legs.

Champions don’t rely on feelings, they rely on habits.

3. Coachable Attitude

Accept. Adjust. Apply.

4. Silent Confidence

Hindi maingay.
Hindi nagyayabang.
Pero siguradong-sigurado sa sarili.

They know who they are
and where they’re going.

B. Paano Mag-Train ang Champion Athlete

1. Train With Purpose, Not Just Attendance

Quality > quantity.

2. Push Beyond Comfort Zones

Kung ano ang comfortable =
hindi nakakatulong lumakas.

A champion embraces:
• pagod
• soreness
• extra drills
• difficult sets
• last-minute adjustments

Discomfort = improvement.

3. Consistency is King

Hindi sila seasonal.
Hindi sila “good today, lazy tomorrow.”

Small daily work

beats big occasional effort.

4. Recovery is Part of Training

Champions rest with purpose:
• good sleep
• proper nutrition
• hydration
• stretching
• listening to the body

Rest is not quitting.
Rest is reloading.

C. Paano Humawak ng Pressure

1. Control What You Can, Release What You Can’t

Hindi lahat hawak mo:
• refs
• weather
• opponent
• crowd
• opinions

Pero hawak mo ang:
• attitude
• effort
• focus
• preparation
• reactions

Doon naglalaro ang champion.

2. Pressure Becomes Fuel, Not Fear

3. Short Memory Principle

Pag namali—move on agad.
Pag nag-turnover—next play.
Pag natalo—next game.

Hindi sila nabubuhay sa yesterday.
They respond in the now.

4. Deep Breathing + Mental Reset

Sa big moments:
• inhale 4 seconds
• hold 2
• exhale 6

This resets the mind, heart rate, and focus.

Simple, pero ginagawa ng pinakamagagaling.

A champion is not just strong in skill— strong sila sa pag-iisip, sa disiplina, sa attitude, at sa pagharap sa pressure.

HOW A COACH BUILDS A WINNING TEAM

1. Clear Vision and Purpose

A winning team knows where they are going.

2. Open Communication

Kapag may problema, pinag-uusapan.
Kapag may conflict, nililinaw.
Walang chismis, walang siraan—only solution, not division.

3. Discipline Over Talent

Talent wins games.
Pero discipline wins championships.

Ang winning team ay hindi lang magagaling—
sila yung consistent, punctual, coachable, at may work ethic na hindi natitinag.

4. Everyone Has a Role

5. Respect and Sportsmanship

6. Build Confidence, Not Fear

Confidence creates champions.
Fear only creates pressure.

7. Lead by Example

A winning team is not made overnight—
but it can be built every day, with every training session, every sacrifice, every lesson in defeat, and every small victory.

Winning is a culture.
Winning is a mindset.
And it starts with leadership rooted in integrity, discipline, and heart.

🥋 ARNIS TRIVIA: ZAMBOANGA CITY EDITION!

Did you know?

Arnis is one of the strongest grassroots sports in Zamboanga City. Many public schools and barangay centers include Arnis in their training programs because it’s inexpensive, easy to learn, and deeply connected to Filipino culture.

Zamboanga athletes are known for producing competitive Arnisadors. Local schools consistently join regional and national meets, with Zamboangueño athletes often earning podium finishes in Palarong Pambansa and regional tournaments.

Arnis is deeply linked to Mindanao’s traditional martial forms. Although Arnis is practiced nationwide, Southern Philippines including Zamboanga remains one of the regions where stick-fighting traditions stayed active across communities.

The sport promotes discipline and self-defense among youth. Coaches in Zamboanga highlight how Arnis improves reflexes, respect, and cultural pride making it a favorite in both PE classes and varsity programs.

Arnis became the National Martial Art of the Philippines in 2009, which strengthened its promotion across all cities including Zamboanga leading to more school competitions, training clinics, and community exhibitions.
