Raja Asghar Ali, son of Raja Durrani, son of Raja Mir Baz Khan of Punyal, Gahkuch Bala, was an outstanding polo player.
In April 1975, during the spring polo matches at the Royal Polo Ground in Gilgit, I was sitting with some friends in front of the stage, watching the match. That day, the match was being played between the NLI-2 and punyal teams.
From the beginning of the game until it was stopped, the spectators in the Royal Ground were repeatedly chanting the name of one player: “Asghar! Asghar! Asghar!” The entire ground echoed with his name.
The young player was galloping his horse towards the ball near the dais with incredible speed. Suddenly, a player from the opposing team collided with Amir Hayat’s horse. In the confusion, Asghar fell from his horse and became unconscious. Spectators rushed towards him from all directions.
He was immediately taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Blood was seen gushing from his mouth. After a short while, he was brought back to the ground, but sadly, we learned that he had passed away.
Everyone appeared deeply grieved and shocked. After witnessing this tragic incident, I never again felt like watching a polo match.
May Allah grant the departed soul a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous and bless him with eternal peace. Ameen.
