Answer: Do you love scuba diving, canoeing, surfing, and other water sports? If you do, you probably already know that the sea is full of harsh elements that can sap your will, drain your strength, and harm your body. You need to be protected when you are out at sea. One way to do this is to wear a wetsuit. This is a garment usually made out of foamed neoprene. Suits can range from a sleeveless “shortie,” which covers only the upper body, to a full one that covers up to the shins.
Why is wearing a wetsuit recommended? First, it takes advantage of water’s exceptional conductivity, which is 25 times more efficient than that of air, to trap heat. When you dive into the sea, the wetsuit absorbs and traps a thin layer of water between the fabric and your skin. Your natural body heat heats up this film of water, making you feel more comfortable and warm even in cold seas. For added warm-water retention, some suits feature special insulating suit cuffs and collars. For its warming factor to work efficiently, the suit must have a snug fit.
Next, neoprene fabric has microscopic bubbles filled with nitrogen gas. Because nitrogen is a very light gas, it makes the suit very buoyant. Thus, wetsuits help you stay afloat. Its buoyancy requires divers to calculate extra weight values based on their suit’s thickness so they can achieve natural buoyancy when they are underwater. Finally, the thickness of neoprene fabric makes your wetsuit act like an armour. Thus, it protects you from cuts and abrasions from marine debris, corals, rocks, and sand as you enjoy your favourite water activities.
