Mr. Dion News:
You betrayed the trust of a community. You took away a dream and struck directly at the heart of Mayagüez.
But there is still time.
Withdraw the relocation request to Isabela. Give us back our Indios de Mayagüez.
Perhaps you have never experienced what it means to grow up identifying with a BSN franchise and with the colors of a town. Because of that, you may not fully understand what this decision represents to generations of people from Mayagüez.
The BSN is not simply a business. It is not just contracts, sponsorships, ticket sales, profits and losses. The BSN is community. It is neighborhood. It is family. It is tradition. It is wearing a jersey bearing the name of your city and knowing that you represent something that existed long before any of us arrived.
An owner can manage a franchise, invest in it and make decisions regarding its operations. But that does not mean he owns its history.
The history of the Indios belongs to Mayagüez.
You arrived in this league recently. The Indios have lived in the memories of our people for generations. Before you, there were players, coaches, owners, employees and thousands of fans who built this franchise. There were victories, defeats, championships, tears, unforgettable nights and entire families that passed the pride of being an Indio from parents to children.
That cannot simply be packed up and moved to another town as though none of it ever happened.
You can relocate an operation.
You can relocate players.
You can relocate contracts.
But you cannot relocate our history.
You cannot relocate our memories.
You cannot relocate our identity.
And you certainly cannot take ownership of them.
Mr. News, there is still time to lessen some of the damage that has been done.
I cannot guarantee that Mayagüez will forget this decision or that the deep resentment it has created will disappear. But withdrawing the relocation request would be an important first step toward recognizing that some things cannot be measured solely in dollars.
And let one thing be absolutely clear:
We are not begging.
We are defending what we believe belongs to our community and demanding respect for a history that generations of people from Mayagüez helped build.
Give us back our Indios de Mayagüez.
There is still time.
The next decision is yours.
But the history, the pride and the heart of the Indios will always belong to Mayagüez.
