atelier d'architecture et d'urbanisme anastas // www.aauanastas.com Thinking of a project as a process is the only common thread running through our work.

Founded in 1979, AAU Anastas is a wholly owned Palestinian architectural and engineering practice with offices in Bethlehem and in Paris. Beginning the thinking of a project at the opposite end of the planning spectrum, from the bottom up, helps us merge into the deep understanding of local know-hows, and capacities of widening or subverting the initial end result to new uses. Lancement du livre “Parlement de la recherche”
mercredi 26 nov.

Stone Matters in the current issue of “Pierre de lutte” article by Anastasia de Villepin

An article dedicated to our dear friend and collaborator that sadly left us last month - may his soul rest in peace.

Maurizio Brocato was my friend and mentor, who always seemed to guide me into some astonishing and foolhardy endeavors.

Maurizio was not only an optimistic genius but also a way of doing, of thinking, of talking to people and creating relationships. He was an uncompromising resistant of an infinite optimism.

With Maurizio, we worked with stonemasons - ex pizzaiolos - that converted to the production of Corinthian and Flamboyant stone capitals, we built a fragmented slab - he never liked saying ‘flat vault’ - that is earthquake-resistant without any construction permit, we transported 5 meters tall structures that weighed more than 5000 kg on a truck along a 45 degrees sloped road, we hired the most famous DJ in Bethlehem because he had enough muscles to drill perfectly straight cores in a hard stone, we built a structure with stones of a 19th century demolished building, we exhibited at the Venice Biennale with a structure whose calculations were complete after production and right before mounting, we were astonished by the results every time although we were certain of what we were doing.During a workshop we gave in France, the students thought I was Maurizio’s son, he never told them it was not true. When my son was born, he told me “Grandpa is happy”.

We are ready today to honor his spirit in each of our achievements. We are ready to make him proud with all our strength.

An hour dedicated to you Maurizio tonight at 19:30 Bethlehem time on

Stone matters is an experimentations-based research into the potentials for including structural stone in the language of contemporary architecture
and for combining traditional craftsmanship and materials with innovative construction techniques. First born as a reaction to a systematic misuse
of clad stone in Palestine, the project takes its cue from the historic reoccurrence of stone-made architectural elements found in Palestine.
