A Michel Robert jumping saddle in good condition, with minor signs of normal use. It has passed our full inspection before listing.

Prestige developed this model with French show jumper Michel Robert. In 2013 they described it as a saddle for riders who prefer a narrower twist and a more forward seat position.

It is built on the Prestige composite tree of that period, and its width can be narrowed or widened without taking the saddle apart.

“This Hastilow came in with a rider who has retired from riding. They brought us two saddles, and this is one of them.

The saddles had been theirs for a long time. They were not ridden in as much as you might expect, and there were long stretches when they stayed in storage.

That showed in the leather. It looked dry and felt dry, and it needed proper preparation before any conditioner went near it.

The order we follow:

→ Clean first, dust and residue off
→ Prepare the surface
→ Condition after that, as much as the leather takes

A retired rider brought us two saddles. This is the Hastilow.

Its leather came in dry after long periods of limited use, so the preparation took more than a wipe-down. We clean before we condition on every saddle. On dry leather, that order counts for more.

→ Dust and residue removed
→ Surface prepared
→ Conditioned once the leather was ready

The rider no longer plans to ride, which is why the saddle came to us. We would rather take longer over a saddle like this than put conditioner over dust and send it out looking finished.

This Hastilow spent long periods with limited use. When it reached us, the leather was dry. Storage alone does not guarantee leather stays in good condition. Leather that sits unused still needs looking after.

With dry leather, the temptation is to go straight to conditioner. Cleaning comes first. Conditioner put over dust and old residue does not reach the leather properly, so the dust comes off, the surface gets prepared, and conditioning follows once the leather is ready for it.

If you have a saddle in storage, look at the leather about once a month, even when nobody is riding in it.

This Kent & Masters never made it to the website.

We checked it, cleaned it and started getting it ready to list. Someone bought it before we had the chance.

It arrived well looked after, so the preparation stayed small. On leather like this, I work in a set order:

→ Dirt off first, without scrubbing into the grain
→ Time for the leather to dry on its own
→ A cream leather feeder, in a thin layer
→ Then stop

The last step matters most here. Leather in this condition has nothing missing, and extra product only leaves more on the surface to clean off later.

This saddle has sold. More saddles come through the workshop this week, so keep an eye on this page.

Cleaning a pre-owned Jaguar by Harry Dabbs.

It came in looking dull. Not damaged — just untouched for a while, with dust settled deep into the stitching and a layer of residue across the seat that a quick wipe simply wouldn’t remove.

The order matters more than the products:

→ Remove dry dust from the seams and around the hardware
→ Clean the leather, then let it dry
→ Use a cotton bud along the stitch lines, where a cloth only reaches the surface
→ Clean the hardware, keepers and billets by hand
→ Condition last — a thin layer, carefully worked into the leather

The stitching takes the longest. It also tells you the most, because dirt and residue collect there long before they become obvious anywhere else.

By the end, the natural grain becomes visible again and the depth of the black returns. Same leather — nothing added, just properly cleaned and conditioned.

The tree, panels and serial number were checked before any of this started.
