Benefits of Morning Sunlight

Light is the principal control of our day/night cycle, telling our bodies when to do what. And at the top of that list is when to sleep.

We’ve established the importance of keeping regular sleep times and wake times as part of your daily schedule. But when paired with morning exposure to sunlight—whether it be a walk with your dog or just lounging on your patio—the powerful duo sets you up for sleep success.

Research has found that those exposed to greater amounts of morning sunlight were quicker to fall asleep at night, and had fewer nighttime wake-ups than those who were exposed to less morning light. Plus, the people getting more morning sun were also less likely to report feelings of depression and stress.

Not bad for something that’s completely free and just outside your front door, right?

How hormones and temperature play a part

By soaking up daylight in the morning, your body will naturally produce less melatonin (the sleep-inducing hormone) in the morning, and therefore produce more at night. Melatonin is necessary for deep, restorative sleep, and can help you fall asleep easier and faster.

Why Your Daily Walks Aren’t Enough For A Healthy Happy Life

Maybe you’ve always had an active life filled with morning swims, dog walks or the odd game of tennis. Perhaps you’ve even been a casual runner most of your life, logging 10 or 15 miles a week on a semi-regular basis. You feel healthy, but one day you’re surprised to find out all that cardio wasn’t enough.

It could be a bone density scan that says you have the first signs of osteoporosis. Or it might be something more subtle, like needing help to get up off the floor or losing your balance getting off the boat at the lake. Stronger bones and better balance are just two of the reasons why women should do strength training..

It’s not uncommon for women to reach midlife and find out that cardio is not enough to keep them healthy and strong. The good news is it’s never too late to start strength training, using your own body weight or with weights, and bring balance back to your fitness routine.

VB Fit Quick Guide to Starting Exercise

So, you’ve been out of the game, maybe you never have, but you’re now thinking, “maybe it’s time to start exercising.” You’re excited by the prospect, and then you’re hit by doubt. You start to think, “maybe next week”.
You are not alone! It’s a mental battle we have all had at different times in our lives. Getting past this however, will open up a whole new world of opportunities to you, introduce you to new communities and cool, like-minded people, whilst improving your physical and mental health and fitness.
Here are 10 of the most common reasons people find too not exercise and some simple solutions:
• I have no time (doing as little as 15-20 minutes is a good starting point)
• I’m too tired (you’ll soon learn you feel more refreshed after you’ve exercised)
• I have family obligations (get your family involved)
• I’m too lazy and lack will power (the benefits of exercise far outweigh not exercising)
• I don’t like exercise (find an exercise that you do like, it doesn’t have to be the gym)
• I’ve tried before and failed (99% of all people who exercise have stopped at some point)
• I lack confidence (will gradually build by setting smaller goals)
• I find the gym intimidating (you don’t need to go to the gym)
• Exercise is uncomfortable (choose the best exercise for you)
• I don’t know where to start (There is a lot of free information out there that can help get you started. If you feel overwhelmed by all the information then invest in yourself and hire a personal trainer. They know what they are doing and their job is to help you achieve your goals.
Starting exercise can appear an insurmountable challenge, but it needn’t be. While it might be difficult in the early stages, the long term benefits are innumerable.
Identify your goals, create a plan, ask the right questions, get professional help, believe in yourself and you will nail it!
