When I began coaching leaders 10 years ago, I regularly got asked the same question “How can I lead better?”

They expected me to respond with tactics like better time management, sharper strategic planning, maybe give them a framework for team alignment.

What they didn’t expect?

That the answer would almost always come down to soft skills: listening deeply, managing conflict, showing empathy or communicating with clarity under pressure.

We call them “soft,” but I think these are the hardest and most vital skills in leadership.

It’s impossible to code your way through emotional intelligence. You can’t delegate trust-building. As leaders, it’s time to stop treating soft skills like optional electives.
They are core curriculum.

AI is causing a massive shift. Technical skills are being automated, knowledge is everywhere. And yes, AI can write reports, summarise data, even draft presentations. But soft skills? They’re more important than ever and for leader they are your advantage. Here’s what AI can’t do - and what leaders must double down on:

The ability to motivate a struggling employee.

The empathy to manage a burnout conversation with care.

The courage to have a tough conversation with grace.

Soft skills are impossible to replicate and more essential than ever.

If you want to future-proof your career, don’t just level up what you know. Level up how you lead. Because in a world of machines, how you show up as a human is what matters most.

I hope you all had a chance to switch off and enjoy a proper rest over the Easter weekend? Coming back after a break always reminds me just how valuable downtime really is, not just for our wellbeing, but for our perspective too.

Now that we’re back, it’s a great time to reset and refocus. I’m checking in with my team this week, not just on priorities, but on how everyone’s doing. After all, recharging isn’t a one-time thing - it’s something we need to build into how we work, especially when team works remotely.

I plan to carry that post-Easter clarity forward. When we lead with empathy and make space for balance, we build stronger, more resilient teams. For information on my leadership coaching packages email: [email protected]

I’ve been reflecting on the importance of taking a real break. When your team works remotely it’s easy to blur the lines between work and rest - but stepping away is essential. Easter is a great reminder that we need to pause, recharge and reconnect with family and friends, and leave work behind.

I’ve learned that when I take time to rest, I come back with more clarity, energy and perspective. And it’s just as important for our teams. Encouraging breaks helps everyone stay healthy, focused and motivated - because sustainable performance starts with wellbeing. Have a great Easter weekend everyone🐣

Remote leadership can sometime feel reactive, just responding to messages and solving problems. But great leadership takes intention. It’s about being deliberate with your communication, culture and connection.
I set the tone by being visible and clear. When communication is intentional, there’s less second-guessing. I also create purposeful moments to connect with my team, whether that’s a quick check-in, a team reflection session, or simply making space for casual chats. Culture isn’t built by accident; it’s shaped by what we prioritise. Leading remotely isn’t just about keeping things running- it’s about leading on purpose. And when we lead with intention, teams feel supported, aligned, and empowered.

I find although working remotely gives teams flexibility, it can also blur the lines between work and personal life. Without the usual office cues, I find burnout is harder to spot and can creep in unnoticed. That’s why I take a proactive approach to well-being and create space for these conversations, rather than waiting for people to raise concerns.

I find regular 1-2-1 check-ins should include well being too. Asking open-ended questions like? What have you found energising or draining lately? How does that make you feel? helps prevent bigger issues down the line and encourages healthy boundaries.

One of my golden rules is to respect offline hours, encourage regular breaks and recognise effort, not just output. A thriving team has to be sustainable. When well-being is at the heart of leadership, trust and performance follow.

Mind mapping also helps me with decision-making. When faced with a complex challenge, I create a mind map to break it down: What’s the core issue? What are the possible solutions? What are the risks? Seeing everything laid out makes it easier to make informed choices and gives the team confidence that decisions aren’t made in a vacuum.

Leadership often means navigating decisions with multiple moving parts. Without a clear way to organise thoughts, it’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis or make choices without fully seeing the bigger picture. Mind mapping brings structure to complexity, helping leaders and teams move forward with clarity and confidence.

One of the most useful tools I’ve found for leadership is mind mapping. When your team works remotely it’s easy for ideas to get lost or for discussions to feel disconnected. A mind map helps bring clarity, structure and creativity to problem-solving.

I use them in team meetings to visually capture ideas, connect thoughts, and highlight priorities. They’re great for brainstorming solutions, planning projects, or even recording team concerns. By making the process collaborative, whether using digital tools or a simple shared document, everyone can contribute, and patterns emerge that we might have missed in a linear discussion.

Leadership is about more than just communication—it’s about creating clarity. When people can see where they fit into the bigger picture, they feel more engaged and empowered.

I find one of the biggest challenges of remote leadership is making sure your team feels heard, not just in our meetings, but in the moments that matter. When I am in an office, its usually the informal chats in the corridor, where concerns surface naturally. To understand how my team are feeling when we work remotely, I need to create that space with intention.

Sharing my own challenges helps me set the tone as well as welcoming honest feedback .I regularly arrange 1-2-1s to check their well-being, not just project updates. By using tools like anonymous surveys or Q&A forums I can give the quieter voices a platform. Most importantly, I follow through, acknowledging input and taking action. I find trust grows when people feel heard.

I remember the first time I managed a remote team, I felt like I had lost one of my most valuable leadership tools: the ability to read the room. No more quick glances for engagement or casual chats to sense overwhelm, just video calls, emails and messages, trying to decode emotions through screens.

If you’ve ever led a remote team, you’ll know this challenge. Without non-verbal cues, understanding morale and stress can feel like solving a puzzle with missing pieces. But while remote work changes how we connect, it doesn’t prevent deep communication, we just need to be more intentional. Over time, I’ve developed key strategies to ‘read’ remote teams, which I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks.
