How are Atlantic salmon doing in 2026? That’s the big question.
After spending weeks on the rivers across Eastern Canada, we found reasons to be hopeful—but we also know the work is far from over.
As says, Atlantic salmon are fighters. They’re survivors. We need to give them every chance we can and continue working together to protect the rivers they depend on.
The future of Atlantic salmon is fragile, and every one of us has a role to play in its future.

If you fish for Atlantic salmon, you can probably relate.
You plan for it. You think about it. You tie flies. You travel for it. You make thousands of casts. And if you’re lucky, maybe 0.05% of the time, everything comes together.
There’s probably a certain kind of insanity that comes with chasing Atlantic salmon—but that’s exactly what keeps us coming back. The mystery, the challenge, the hope that the next cast might be the one.

There was no better way to end our journey across Eastern Canada than fly fishing the legendary Grande Cascapédia River alongside my longtime friend and guide, David Bishop .
I was also honoured to share the river with Blake Romich and Joshua Bradstreet, two Mi’kmaq guides from Plamúgwet whose deep connection to these waters spans generations.
It was a Father’s Day we’ll never forget. I truly felt like my dad was watching over us. The river rewarded Blake with his first bright June Atlantic salmon after a ten-year wait. Josh landed a beautiful bright salmon of his own, and David put me over several fish, including what was likely the fish of a lifetime—one that will forever remain a mystery.
We’ll always remember that day on the Grande Cascapédia and everything it gave us. It reminded us of what these rivers once were and, with continued conservation and stewardship, what they can become again.
It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey and a season that renewed our hope for the future of wild Atlantic salmon.
