Great swimming weather recently.
The weather will continue to improve as we move out of the rainy season into February. Children can look forward to sunny skies and warmer water.
The last few months have been one of the wettest in recent memory. Swimming lessons were cancelled throughout Singapore.
Parents and children traveled all the way to the pool, only to never touch the pool. But yet continue to pay school fees.
Unique among swim schools, FOSS monitors the weather and informs parents ahead of time if lessons can't continue. It's a service we feel we have to do to avoid disappointment and wasted time and money for parents.
We don't relish cancelling classes either, but there isn't a choice as the pool will be closed for safety reasons.
But over the next few months, we expect that the sun will shine and that the children will rapidly pick up invaluable swimming skills.

Introducing the Rapid Otter Movement (ROM) method!
https://friendlyotter.com/rapid-otter-movement/
It has honestly been in my head for a long time but have finally written an introduction for it.
ROM is a breakthrough method of learning swimming, developed through thousands of coaching hours and students.
By focusing on the essentials of swimming such as breathing and buoyancy, children are able to rapidly learn and understand how to move in the water.
A lot of focus is also placed on having as much time in the water as safely possible, and avoiding a long queue system.
Often times, children will be able to swim a few metres in the very first lesson.
While children will have different starting points, we can confidently say that all students will see rapid improvements in the first few months of lessons.

Have been getting sticker shock as GST is raised to 9% across Singapore 😥.. Everyday items and services have nearly all increased in prices.
But FOSS has decided not to raise our fees despite feeling the same cost of living pressures as anyone else.
What's more important to us is customer satisfaction and helping children to swim.
We will still strive to deliver high quality swim lessons at the same great prices!

Why don't we charge for rainy days?
The standard practice for swim schools is to continue to charge for lessons, even if the pool becomes unusable due to rain or lightning. Lessons would take place outside the water, through land drills or verbal lessons.
This is understandable as the swimming coach's income becomes unstable if he can't work. He or she can't control the weather.
At the Friendly Otter Swim School, we believe in being different, and being centered around the parents and child. We don't want to waste the parents' money, or make the child go through a suboptimal experience.
That's why we will actively monitor the weather and inform the parents if we have to cancel. When that happens, we will reschedule or credit the lesson back to you. If your child is not in the water, there are no charges.
We can do this because we teach in our community. We live close to where we teach.
By doing this, we provide value to both parents and children. Staying true to our mission to give Otter-ly Fantastic Swim Lessons.

Breath control is among the first things we teach at the Friendly Otter Swim School.
Taking in oxygen during swimming is different than from on land. Instead of just using the nose, swimming requires inhaling through the mouth quickly, and exhaling through the nose slowly.
Without this fundamental knowledge, children and adults will struggle and inhale water through the nose, which is a rather unpleasant experience.
That's why we break things down and explain it to our students right from the start.

I always bring a couple of extra goggles with me for lessons.
With so many classes going on, it's inevitable that someone will forget their own.
Swimming without googles is hard and painful. You can't open your eyes, and they can get red and sore quickly.
This small thing makes a world of difference for the child. Even though some kids have lost my goggles (I don't understand how they disappear within 3 minutes of the lesson ending), its part of the job.
It's reward enough for me to see the kids being able to rejoin the class and have a good experience.
