Guardian Girls Karate is more than just a program - it’s a global movement; a powerhouse collaboration between the World Karate Federation, the Koyamada International Foundation, and the UNFPA.
This initiative equips women and girls with the ultimate toolkit: the practical skills to confront and defeat gender-based violence. By leveraging the discipline of Karate, the program transforms lives - forging unshakable confidence, resilience, and leadership through the lens of self-defense and mutual respect.
We are thrilled to announce that Ms. Shannon Leong represented the Karate-do Union of Singapore (KUS) at the WKF Guardian Girls Karate Instructors’ Seminar in Tokyo (March 7–8, 2026). Training alongside leaders from 13 Asian nations, Shannon has returned ready to ignite this mission in Singapore.
At KUS, we are proud to stand behind the Guardian Girls initiative. We aren't just training athletes; we also champion the safety and strength of every woman.🥋💥

We are proud to celebrate three outstanding KUS National Training Squad athletes who have been awarded the prestigious Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) Colours Award (Distinction) in recognition of their sporting excellence in Karate.
The award, presented by the Singapore Schools Sports Council, honours exceptional student-athletes from secondary schools, junior colleges, and Millennia Institute for their achievements and exemplary character. Conferred annually, it comprises Distinction and Colours awards, as well as the coveted Best Sportsboy and Best Sportsgirl titles.
Their achievement reflects not only their talent and perseverance, but also the strong spirit of discipline and resilience cultivated through Karate. We commend their hard work and commitment, and we look forward to seeing them continue to excel and inspire others in the sporting arena.
Congratulations to Elijah Tham, Yew Yaxi and Gareth Sng on this well-deserved honour! 🥋🏆

Singapore karate’s upward trajectory was underlined by a breakthrough SEA Games campaign, headlined by debutant Marissa Hafezan’s historic women’s under-55kg kumite gold — the Republic’s first in the sport since 1993 — and Isaiah Tang’s bronze, as the national team showed growing competitiveness on the regional stage.
Behind the results is a deliberate push for overseas exposure, with athletes funding and attending elite training camps in Japan, Turkey and Vietnam, with some competing regularly in WKF events. These experiences have paid dividends, most notably for kata specialist Shannon Leong, who became the first Singaporean female athlete to reach the round of 16 at the World Karate Championships in November.
With juniors already training alongside regional counterparts and more athletes targeting international circuits like the Karate1 Series A and Premier League, Singapore karate is laying the groundwork to move beyond SEA Games success and challenge Asia’s and the world’s best.
