When teaching swimming, one of the first skills we focus on is blowing bubbles in the water. Many parents may think it looks like a simple game… but in reality, it is one of the most important foundations of swimming.
Why is blowing bubbles so important?
✅ Teaches proper breathing control
Swimming requires a different breathing pattern from normal breathing on land. A swimmer must learn to breathe in through the mouth above water and breathe out in the water. Blowing bubbles trains this naturally.
✅ Prevents panic in the water
Children or beginners who hold their breath often become tense and anxious. Learning to exhale in the water helps them stay calm and relaxed.
✅ Builds water confidence
When swimmers can put their face in the water and blow bubbles comfortably, they become less fearful of water entering their nose or mouth.
✅ Improves floating and swimming technique
Holding the breath creates tension in the body. Proper exhaling helps swimmers relax, float better, and move more smoothly in the water.
What happens if a swimmer DOESN’T learn to blow bubbles properly?
❌ They may panic when water touches their face
❌ They may hold their breath too long and feel breathless
❌ Their body becomes stiff, making floating and swimming harder
❌ They may struggle with freestyle, breaststroke, and other strokes later on
❌ Some children develop fear because they feel “out of control” in the water
That’s why in swim coaching, blowing bubbles is not just a game — it is the foundation of breathing, confidence, and safety in swimming.
Sometimes the smallest skill creates the biggest breakthrough in the pool. 💦🏊
