It was that time of year again, Friday night lights at SAS, all the other sports had finished their games and it was now time for the boys basketball finale. Spirits were high, the boys were ready, the crowd was excited. The game started off great for the dover boys, the energetic defence was what held us strong, being able to get good stops on one side of the court and then the quick bucket on the other was the pattern that kept us ahead. The first quarter ended 19-14 to dover and things were looking good. The second quarter went on similarly, The loud chants from the crowd fueling the boys energy early in the second, although due to some small errors in the last few minutes, SAS managed to close the gap. Making the final score for the half, 36-33 in favour of UWC. Following a great dance show by the mascots, the second half was here. Again, the start of the third was promising with some big buckets from the boys, although glimpses of fatigue were starting to be seen. The final score to the third quarter was 56. Going into the fourth quarter a tie game, everyone knew it would be a big one. As the play went on the boys started to make small mistakes here and there that eventually built up, and with SAS also knocking down some important shots deep into the fourth, It posed too hard of a challenge to fight back. Despite the intense competitiveness and effort, UWC ended up losing 72-82.

Here is a message from the coach and some of the players following the game.

We would firstly like to thank the UWC community for coming out and supporting the game.
This historical event of playing SAS at the beginning of our season has given us the opportunity to challenge ourselves both mentally and physically. The team gave a tremendous effort, played their hearts out, but fell short in a couple of aspects which they feel could rectify as the season progresses.
SAS always provide an excellent atmosphere for us to play in, where it's so loud and fast-paced, which always make us grow individually and collectively. It's now up to us to take on the challenge; we had the right attitude but came up short technically. Building upon our mistakes can and will be the teams biggest takeaway of the game. The team definitely has more to give and we hope we can show that in the coming months.

"Winning is a byproduct of processes, not an end goal."

Two weeks ago, our Rugby boys had a phenomenal play against the Eagles at SAS’s annual ‘Homecoming’ game, ending the evening with a victorious 26 - 7. Although SEASAC Rugby only comes into the scene in the third season, Our Phoenix boys have been training hard since the beginning of the year, and it is evidently paying off. There was a significant crowd, including many of our own supporters eager to watch. The game finally kicked off at 4:30, and the team was lead by a good defence in the first few minutes of the game; they were patient and resilient, holding out until striking off an Eagles mistake. Continuing strong, it was a shock when a yellow card was pulled on the team; however, the boys successfully managed to keep it together, holding the Eagles back at only one Try score. Meanwhile, Captain Erik Bryant struck back with an exceptional full length Try off of great work from Oliver Gullery. The game only got better, as the boys saved their best move, a new move they had been working on for a while, for last and executed it with “perfection, accuracy, and flair” as stated by Erik. By the end of the game, the team had scored a total of 4 Trys, 3 from Erik Bryant (G12) and 1 from Richard Paisley (G11), putting them well ahead of SAS and into the position of victory. With still a while to go before SEASAC, the boys are in excellent shape and will no doubt do very well at their biggest competition of the year.

The boys weren’t the only ones walking away with the gold that evening. Our Phoenix Touch Prems team brought home a smashing 10-1 win against SAS at Homecoming. The girls, too, have been working hard since the start of the year, and recently came back from their Brisbane tour which they all agree was an “amazing experience”. The Homecoming game witnessed an impressive and outstanding performance from all the players, but a special mention must go to Jemima Lee (G11) who had been out of the sport for a while due to injury. With SEASAC being the next big game, it’s back to the grind for our UWC Touch girls as they hope to bring back the Gold.

It was the lunch time that everyone loves: the Shaun Hanley memorial cup was upon us. Both teams lined up in front of the crowd and the traditional minute of silence was timed. South had won the kickoff and soon after the ball goes out of bounds for the first time. Off a well played line out by the north side they manage to spread the ball quick, allowing the speedy Harry Layard to burst through the south line on his first touch. With a follow up of a fantastic conversion, the score now sat at 7-0 in favour of the northern hemisphere. Play continued with a great display of offence and defence from both sides with some big tackles being made, sending the crowd into many “oohhhs” and “aaahhhs”. Although it is Harry Layard again who eventually breaks the back and forth play with an impressive gap run off an offload from a tackled forward, unfortunately the conversion was missed due to the difficult angle, thus making the score now 12-0. Half time is called, both teams take a breather, subs are made and it looks like the south are going to have to figure something out quick to keep themselves in the competition. Early on in the second half the south scrum half, Noah Meurer, a new recruit to the school, makes a big break down the left wing, the crowd goes wild, despite being very close to scoring, he is eventually caught by the other team, but with the use of a quick pickup from a ruck by his team mate, south secure their first try. The conversion is narrowly missed and the score is now 12-5, making it a very exciting one try game. With two minutes left in the game, Olly Gullery picks off a ruck very close to the try line, makes it look so easy with an absolutely clinical inside step, letting him through without even being touched. With the crowd stunned, spirits high, a great game having been played for the remembrance of a great man. The final whistle is blown. The score ended up being 17 to 5, and team north are to hold the historic trophy high.

After years without a win against their rivals, the 19A Volleyball went to the SAS Playday with a point to prove. Up against Singapore American School, STH and a team from Queensland, Australia, the Phoenix team were soon to play in a riveting and close game. After comfortably beating STH and getting one opponent out of the way, they would play SAS, and face the formidable challenge of seeking victory. The first set began, after going back and forth with points the close-contested and exciting first set was eventually won by the UWC boys after a string of big blocks and some solid hits. The second set continued in a similar fashion, with Phoenix co-captain Lucas winning several points with strong serves, along with all of the team members working relentlessly, they managed to pull the win out of the bag for the second set, with a final score of 25-20. They had finally done it, they had finally beaten SAS for the first time in school rivalry history. Overall the tournament was a fantastic experience for all teams that participated, it was a great display of skill, hard work, and determination from our boys and we are extremely happy for them for making the phoenix community proud.
