In Singapore, the word โ€œcoachingโ€ gets easily confused with โ€œcounsellingโ€ or โ€œtherapyโ€. ๐Ÿค” They are 2 different approaches and processes which have different outcomes.

Broading speaking, coaching is future-oriented and action-driven. Coaches see clients as creative, resourceful and whole. ๐ŸŒฑ

In counselling, there is emotional healing and trauma processing. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน Counsellors may spend time on history taking to find out more about your past, r/s with family and others to understand how these may have influenced or shaped who you are today. They may also come in with psychotherapy or intervention during crisis.

Put it simply, work with a coach if itโ€™s for everyday issues such as stress at work, procrastination or confidence issues as long as these are not affecting your day-to-day functioning as an individual. ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป

If you believe you are having maladaptive behaviours ๐Ÿ˜ž (for prolonged periods) which affect your ability at normal daily tasks, it may be useful to visit a counsellor or a therapy instead.

Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Itโ€™s a sign of self-awareness and courage. The strongest people are often the ones brave enough to say, โ€œ๐™„ ๐™™๐™ค๐™ฃโ€™๐™ฉ ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™™๐™ค ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™–๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

The choice of words used, our body posture and tone of voice can change the perceived level of trust and psychological safety that our employee(s) in a conversation.

If you want to appear less confrontational and accusatory, it may be good to rephrase how you ask the question.

Instead of โ€œ๐™’๐™๐™ฎ ๐™™๐™ž๐™™ ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ชโ€ฆโ€, start the conversation with โ€œ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™ก๐™ฅ ๐™ข๐™š ๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™โ€ฆโ€ โœ… where it creates the space for the staff to reflect upon themselves.

Itโ€™s a small shift but reaps big rewards if done right! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

We often hear this, โ€œI am a manager/team lead. I coach my team members at work.โ€

Are you really coaching? If yes, then you wouldnโ€™t be telling them what to do or provide any solutions. Perhaps you have been mentoring them all this while. ๐Ÿคญ

Coaching is one word used rather loosely. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ After all, we associate it to be what sports coaches do; to guide and share some techniques with us so as to improve our performance.

Another important note, we DO NOT diagnose or treat mental health illnesses, which is beyond our scope of work. Hence, for severe and chronic health issues, we refer clients out to mental health professionals who may be in better positions to take care of them.

Each approachโ€”coaching, consulting, mentoring, and therapyโ€”serves distinct purposes. Understanding their differences can help you choose the right path for your personal or professional development journey.

Our Story

Fern comes to the mat โ€“ both as a student and as a teacher.

As a practitioner of 10 years, she has found yoga to be her daily sanctuary of inner joy and peace. A firm believer of the mind-body connection, she learned that a positive mind can be nurtured through mindful asana practice and meditation.

The way we breathe, move and listen to our bodies also build the right foundation on how we navigate our lives off the mat.

Certified in Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga, Fern completed the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Course with Dr Venkyโ€™s Shivshakti Yoga Institute (International) India. This gives an opportunity for her to share her knowledge and lead yoga practices in a safe yet engaging way.

Her asana classes focus on posture alignment and self-awareness. The lessons will leave you feeling more refreshed, grounded and smiling with inner peace.

Off the mat, Fern loves to travel and buries herself in good reads. She is learning to be more aware and present in each passing moment.
