Amsterdam has approved a plan to spend up to 100,000 euros on installing small staircases along its canals to help cats and other animals escape if they fall in. According to DutchNews nl, the initiative was proposed after reports showed that at least 19 cats drowned in the city’s waterways in 2025.

The staircases will be placed in high risk areas identified by local animal welfare groups and will blend into the historic look of the city.
