I met Miss Payne about 1984 at Myrtie ’s General Store on Route 33 at Wilton in the Delta Region of Virginia. At that time, she was completely blind. After finding her favorite rocking chair, someone would bring her her banjo, where she would kick out some of the best bluegrass I’ve heard, playing and singing while the wood stove kept everybody warm. This was the place to go for a few canned goods, saltines, soda pop, and stick matches; and of course good clean fun on a Saturday night. Times and places like this and people like Myrtie Payne are hard to come by these days. Here we can see my father playing banjo alongside her.
