🚧 SIAKA STEVENS STADIUM: FROM PROMISE TO DELAY 🇸🇱⚽
The $40 million rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown was launched with high hopes to transform Sierra Leone’s biggest football ground into a modern, world-class facility.
Originally built in 1979 and serving as the home of the Leone Stars, the stadium had gone decades without major upgrades. The government, through the Ministry of Sports, partnered with a Chinese construction company to completely overhaul the facility from the pitch and seating to the swimming pool, gym, and other key structures.
⏳ The project, which began around 2021–2022, was initially expected to be completed by early 2024.
But today, the reality is different.
❌ The stadium is still under construction
❌ No confirmed completion date
❌ Leone Stars continue to play home matches outside the country
Delays have sparked growing frustration among fans and football authorities, with concerns over the slow pace of work and its impact on the development of football in Sierra Leone.
Despite these setbacks, authorities say the goal remains the same which is to deliver a modern stadium that meets international standards and can host major competitions.
For now, one thing is clear:
The Sierra Leone football team is still waiting for its true home.
