As the world unites to combat plastic pollution, a surprising decision threatens to undermine global efforts. The recent policy shift in the United States to reintroduce plastic straws previously banned due to their environmental impact raises serious concerns. While this may seem like a domestic issue, its ripple effects extend far beyond U.S. borders, including here in Sierra Leone.

At EcoRise Africa, we recognize that plastic pollution is not just an environmental crisis it’s a public health and economic issue as well. According to UNEP, 36% of all plastics produced globally are for single-use packaging, and 85% of them end up in landfills or polluting our oceans. In Sierra Leone, we see the effects firsthand: plastic waste clogs our waterways, worsens flooding in urban areas, and disrupts marine ecosystems along our coastline.

The global fight against plastic pollution has made significant strides, with many countries including Sierra Leone exploring policies to reduce single-use plastics and promote sustainable alternatives. However, when major economies roll back progress, it creates challenges for smaller nations advocating for stricter regulations. It also raises questions about the strength of international commitments, such as the proposed UN global treaty to end plastic pollution by 2040.

Yet, history reminds us that one country’s policy shift does not define the global agenda. The United States has often hesitated to ratify international agreements such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982) yet has still followed many of its principles. Similarly, while the return of plastic straws may seem like a setback, public pressure and environmental urgency will continue to drive action forward.

At EcoRise Africa, we remain committed to tackling plastic pollution in Sierra Leone. Through community clean-ups, advocacy, and education on sustainable alternatives, we will continue to push for a greener future. This moment reinforces the need for stronger policies, a circular economy, and collaborative action to protect our environment for generations to come.

Because the Earth does not belong to us we borrow it from our children!

🌾 Harvest Day: A Celebration of Hard Work and Unity 🌾
The moment we had been waiting for finally arrived in January 2025 harvest day! After nearly a year of dedication, learning, and teamwork, we gathered to reap the rewards of our collective efforts. The rice fields, once a blank canvas, were now filled with the fruits of hard work and determination.

This harvest was more than just a milestone; it was a celebration of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared vision. Through our partnership with Masseyanday Farmers’ Association, we’ve empowered young people, strengthened local farmers, and demonstrated the power of sustainable agriculture in driving national development.

For our young participants, this project was a life-changing experience. They gained valuable skills, a deeper connection to their communities, and a renewed sense of purpose. For EcoRise Africa, this was a step forward in our mission to create a sustainable and empowered Sierra Leone.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported this initiative from our partners to the hardworking individuals on the ground. As we look to the future, we are excited to expand this model and continue investing in the power of youth and agriculture.

Together, we are building a better, more sustainable future for all.

🌾 A Vision Coming to Life 🌾

By late 2024, the hard work, dedication, and care poured into this project began to pay off. Our rice fields were thriving and ready for harvest a clear testament to the power of collaboration and sustainable practices.

Walking through the fields, we were reminded of the journey that brought us here. From clearing the land in early 2024 to nurturing the plants over several months, this project has been a labor of love, hope, and determination.

For our young participants, seeing the fields flourish was more than just a farming milestone it was a source of pride and motivation. This project has shown them the potential of agriculture as a tool for empowerment and national development.

The excitement was palpable as we prepared for the final step: harvesting the fruits of our labor. Together, we are proving that with the right support and commitment, anything is possible.

🌾 Tending the Fields, Cultivating Growth 🌾

As the months rolled on, we reached one of the most critical stages of our project: weeding. In mid-to-late 2024, our team came together to remove unwanted plants from the rice fields. This meticulous process required patience, precision, and teamwork.

Weeding is more than just maintaining a farm it’s a metaphor for life. Just as we removed weeds to help the rice thrive, we are also removing the barriers that hold young people back, such as lack of opportunities and resources.

This stage offered a valuable lesson to everyone involved: growth requires consistent effort, care, and attention. Through this process, our young participants gained firsthand experience in sustainable farming and learned the importance of resilience and determination in achieving success.

The fields were beginning to look promising, and the anticipation for what lay ahead kept us motivated. Together, we are cultivating not just crops but also a new generation of empowered leaders.

🌾 Sowing Seeds, Sowing Dreams 🌾Mid-2024 was a pivotal moment in our farm project as we entered the second phase: plowing the land and planting the rice seeds that symbolize hope and resilience. This wasn’t just about preparing soil; it was about preparing a generation to take charge of Sierra Leone’s agricultural future.Working alongside Masseyanday Farmers’ Association, our young participants learned the art and science of sustainable farming. From understanding soil quality to seed selection, they gained hands-on experience that will empower them to become leaders in agriculture. This stage reminded us that every great harvest begins with a single seed. Each seed planted carried the dreams of a community striving for food security and sustainable development. The energy and dedication of everyone involved were truly inspiring. We’re not just growing rice we’re growing skills, opportunities, and hope. Together, we’re building a foundation for a brighter future.

🌱 Reflecting on the Beginning of a Transformative Journey 🌱

In early 2024, EcoRise Africa, in collaboration with Masseyanday Farmers’ Association, embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionize agriculture in Sierra Leone. Our mission: to empower farmers and young people with sustainable farming skills while contributing to food security and national development.

The journey began with the first critical step clearing the land. Grass cutting might seem like a simple task, but for us, it symbolized something much deeper: the removal of barriers that have long hindered growth and opportunity in rural communities.

As young people and local farmers worked side by side, this stage fostered teamwork, determination, and a shared vision of what we could achieve together. The cleared land became a canvas for innovation, resilience, and hope.

This isn’t just a farm it’s the start of a movement to empower communities, one step at a time. Join us on this journey as we cultivate not just rice but opportunities for growth and progress.

🌍 Empowering Communities, Combating Trafficking: EcoRise Africa’s Mission 🌱

At EcoRise Africa, we believe that addressing human trafficking in Africa requires more than policies it demands holistic, localized, and community-driven solutions. Trafficking manifests in unique ways across the continent, from subtle practices like giving children to others to “raise” to large-scale exploitation by organized criminal groups.

Our mission is to empower communities by providing education, resources, and tools to prevent trafficking at its roots. We aim to involve survivors, civil society organizations, and young people in creating solutions that reflect Africa’s unique cultural and social realities.

As Africa continues to embrace the digital era, we are leveraging technology to raise awareness, track cases, and engage youth in the fight against trafficking. We believe young people hold the key to innovative solutions and sustainable progress.

Through localized efforts, survivor-centered initiatives, and community empowerment, EcoRise Africa is committed to fostering a future where every child and community is safe, supported, and thriving.

Join us as we work to end trafficking and create lasting change. Together, we can make a difference.
