As the world unites to combat plastic pollution, a surprising decision threatens to undermine global efforts. The recent policy shift in the United States to reintroduce plastic straws previously banned due to their environmental impact raises serious concerns. While this may seem like a domestic issue, its ripple effects extend far beyond U.S. borders, including here in Sierra Leone.
At EcoRise Africa, we recognize that plastic pollution is not just an environmental crisis it’s a public health and economic issue as well. According to UNEP, 36% of all plastics produced globally are for single-use packaging, and 85% of them end up in landfills or polluting our oceans. In Sierra Leone, we see the effects firsthand: plastic waste clogs our waterways, worsens flooding in urban areas, and disrupts marine ecosystems along our coastline.
The global fight against plastic pollution has made significant strides, with many countries including Sierra Leone exploring policies to reduce single-use plastics and promote sustainable alternatives. However, when major economies roll back progress, it creates challenges for smaller nations advocating for stricter regulations. It also raises questions about the strength of international commitments, such as the proposed UN global treaty to end plastic pollution by 2040.
Yet, history reminds us that one country’s policy shift does not define the global agenda. The United States has often hesitated to ratify international agreements such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS, 1982) yet has still followed many of its principles. Similarly, while the return of plastic straws may seem like a setback, public pressure and environmental urgency will continue to drive action forward.
At EcoRise Africa, we remain committed to tackling plastic pollution in Sierra Leone. Through community clean-ups, advocacy, and education on sustainable alternatives, we will continue to push for a greener future. This moment reinforces the need for stronger policies, a circular economy, and collaborative action to protect our environment for generations to come.
Because the Earth does not belong to us we borrow it from our children!

🌾 A Vision Coming to Life 🌾
By late 2024, the hard work, dedication, and care poured into this project began to pay off. Our rice fields were thriving and ready for harvest a clear testament to the power of collaboration and sustainable practices.
Walking through the fields, we were reminded of the journey that brought us here. From clearing the land in early 2024 to nurturing the plants over several months, this project has been a labor of love, hope, and determination.
For our young participants, seeing the fields flourish was more than just a farming milestone it was a source of pride and motivation. This project has shown them the potential of agriculture as a tool for empowerment and national development.
The excitement was palpable as we prepared for the final step: harvesting the fruits of our labor. Together, we are proving that with the right support and commitment, anything is possible.

🌾 Tending the Fields, Cultivating Growth 🌾
As the months rolled on, we reached one of the most critical stages of our project: weeding. In mid-to-late 2024, our team came together to remove unwanted plants from the rice fields. This meticulous process required patience, precision, and teamwork.
Weeding is more than just maintaining a farm it’s a metaphor for life. Just as we removed weeds to help the rice thrive, we are also removing the barriers that hold young people back, such as lack of opportunities and resources.
This stage offered a valuable lesson to everyone involved: growth requires consistent effort, care, and attention. Through this process, our young participants gained firsthand experience in sustainable farming and learned the importance of resilience and determination in achieving success.
The fields were beginning to look promising, and the anticipation for what lay ahead kept us motivated. Together, we are cultivating not just crops but also a new generation of empowered leaders.

🌍 Empowering Communities, Combating Trafficking: EcoRise Africa’s Mission 🌱
At EcoRise Africa, we believe that addressing human trafficking in Africa requires more than policies it demands holistic, localized, and community-driven solutions. Trafficking manifests in unique ways across the continent, from subtle practices like giving children to others to “raise” to large-scale exploitation by organized criminal groups.
Our mission is to empower communities by providing education, resources, and tools to prevent trafficking at its roots. We aim to involve survivors, civil society organizations, and young people in creating solutions that reflect Africa’s unique cultural and social realities.
As Africa continues to embrace the digital era, we are leveraging technology to raise awareness, track cases, and engage youth in the fight against trafficking. We believe young people hold the key to innovative solutions and sustainable progress.
Through localized efforts, survivor-centered initiatives, and community empowerment, EcoRise Africa is committed to fostering a future where every child and community is safe, supported, and thriving.
Join us as we work to end trafficking and create lasting change. Together, we can make a difference.
