Some swimmers are carrying pressure that belongs years in their future.
At younger ages, swimming can become dominated by conversations about:
Times
Rankings
Qualifying for prestigious meets
Future opportunities
Scholarships & College pathways
Recruitment
And sometimes children begin carrying those expectations long before they are emotionally ready for them.
The truth is...
Most 13, 14 and 15 year old swimmers do not need their future fully mapped out yet.
They need:
Good coaching
Healthy development
Confidence
Consistancy
Support....and time.
A swimming journey develops in phases.
At younger ages, the focus should still be on:
Learning how to train
Developing skills
Building resilience
Understanding competition, and how to manage emotions and pressure in a healthy way.
And equally important...staying connected to the sport itself with enjoyment.
Because swimmers who stay healthy, motivated, and emotionally balanced often develop further than those carrying constant future pressure too early.
There is nothing wrong with having ambitions.
But young swimmers should not feel as though every season determines their entire future.
Their unique journey is still unfolding.
And for most swimmers, there is far more time than people think.
Don't become so focussed on where the journey might lead that you forget to enjoy where it is today.
